Too many hobbies, not enough time: guitar, photography, cycling, math, physics, coffee, travel, software development…

Sci-fi without humanity is extremely dull. A physics or materials science textbook would be more interesting (and useful).

I’ve been wondering if perforation everywhere has been getting worse. Lots of food box packaging seems to have perforation that just doesn’t split cleanly (or at all).

“Yes—essentially exactly right. I would make two corrections.” I want to know what about the training and prompts continually try to massage everyone’s ego. I don’t want to be reassured that I’m on the right track if there’s a train coming the other direction.

I seem to recall reading that scene was a joke they played on the actor and they left it in? He was supposed to walk away a few steps and then end the scene. They never yelled “cut” so he kept walking. Everyone else just watched to see what he’d do.

Pre COVID, I had a 20 mile hilly commute from the burbs to downtown. 45-120 minutes by car depending on traffic 50-90 minutes by bus 50-55 minutes by ebike Lost weight, lowered stress, beautiful ride, felt great.

Yes but it’s a fraction. (I’ve driven/owned other EVs, not the leaf, but they’ve all been similar in that ratio.) I also live on a hill, so coming back home is where the range difference affected me the most.

Hills (so large chunks of Seattle) eat range a lot. So careful with the range the car advertises. If you test drive, take a look at how the car’s range and battery percentage estimate changes quickly when you go up.

Math (and so comp sci) is not a bunch of formulas to memorize. Math is problem solving, and there are no algorithms or heuristics (proven!) to solve all the problems.

Can I introduce you to synchronized skating? Not (yet) an Olympic event, but is in the USFSA. Not split by men/women. (It is predominantly women, but not due to rules.) Local rinks often have shows where you can see amazing skaters.

The current state of sci-fi is amazing. I’d add Anne Leckie and Adrian Tchaikovsky. Ursula K Le Guin’s essays on writing sci-fi and fantasy (The Language of the Night) are really interesting.

When I was in a (16 team) league, the best year I ever had I started 0-3, traded everyone I could for draft picks, and just started whomever I had available left. Won the rest of the season and lost in the championship ship game.

Mine would be file formats and methods of storing and encoding information. I worked on software to identify, parse, display, and transform 100s of file formats. Lots of interesting problems and ways people solved them.

I married my wife for the second time in 1850 at the living history museum my wife worked for. Maybe that doesn’t count since I wasn’t visiting, but participating/volunteering.

I find it very odd that they are debugging Replit’s statements as a true indicator of internal state and how it is working. When it stated “I panicked…”, it did not because it can’t. That’s just its predicted response if a person did this. There is no intent or emotional state behind its output.

In grade school and high school, standardized testing and grading systems disincentivize saying “I don’t know.” Nowhere in the system do students get external rewards (grades) for asking questions or doing the work needed for learning and understanding. Only outputs to inputs are measured.
