When my heat pump fired up this morning for a hot water run, the heat meter reported a massive jump in return temp and a dip in flow. The dip in flow I understand as the colder water in the pipes outside starts to move through it, but how did the return jump to 40?

Trying out a breakdown in my history UI. It will show the make of the daily energy usage. This is all powered by Matter devices #matter

Just when I think I’m getting the hang of mounting these ESP32 modules, I spend an hour flow and reflowing. Damn chip won’t appear as a USB port.

So Ive discovered that the IKEA TIMMERFLOTE sensors are not ICD. They have short interval of about 15 seconds! This really surprises me.

Almost all my rooms and rads are logging. The living room sensor doesn't seem to be playing ball for some reason. My code is managing 24 devices and it's really struggling.

IKEA’s power monitoring plug is only £7. Amazing.

Took a little rework, but my controller is now handling a fair amount of devices. I have five more rad sensors to complete the complement! The subscription loop was getting stuck (poisoned) on ICD devices

So on the larger radiator, I can remove the top and hide the sensor cables inside! This is really tidy. A nicer antenna would be helpful, but good enough! This is really neat and tidy.

All my TIMMERFLOTES are in place. Five radiator sensors to make tomorrow and then I'm in business. I'd like to sort OTA too, so I'm not having to run around updating the sensors manually :)

What do people call their temp/humidity sensors? I’ve started using environment, but it feels clunky.

I'm using AI to create more firmware to run on my ESP32 ModBus Adapter boards. I wrote one example manually, so I'm more confident letting is loose with "Like the SDM120M and SolaxX1G4 examples, build me a modbus firmware that exposes my Kronoterm Adapt 0312 over Matter"

My heat pump did a little heating this morning! Outside temp was down at 9 degrees. The 20kW power spike from the heat meter is something I need to clean, but the COP was around 4.5.

I've had a go at creating a generic #Matter commissioning app (iOS at present, Android to follow). My various ESP32 controllers (heating, home and energy) implement a basic API contract. It's working well. Needs secure communication and some sort of pairing flow. github.com/tomasmcguinn...

I’ve created an iOS app to help with Matter commissioning on my various controllers - energy, heating and home. I’m hoping to get this put into the AppStore for other users. It will use a standard HTTP contract, so can be used by anything. Not sure Apple will approve it, but let’s see!

My Heat Pump – Comparing Hot Water Cost
In post I look at the cost of heating hot water using my heat pump, compared to the same day last year ago, using my immersion.

Here are some figures for my Heat pump's hot water. Last year, I heated my tank by immersion. 5.8kW of electricity over 1:45 minutes to heat three quarters of the tank. Today, the heat pump used 2.15kWh to heat 100% of the tank in an hour. That's 43p vs 15p. About one third the cost!

The IKEA devices I have use 2xAAA batteries. That’s between 1800 and 2400mAh. I suspect my radiator sensor could be adapter to use two of those batteries in a small holder. That would give my radiator sensor about 10 years of battery life!

Nice. I flashed the Espressif Open Thread code onto their Border Router board, and after a little playing around, I think I’ve added this to my Apple Thread network. I’m hoping to put this into the garage to extend my Thread network. Praying it resolves my MBus adapter issues.

I still find the mqtt auto-discovery feature of Home Assistant a little bit like magic. Trying to get the readings from my Heating Monitor into HA. Some are null, no idea why. Next step is getting them into an @openenergymon.bsky.social feed.

At 86% within a few days? My radiator sensor is drawing more power than I expected. It should last a year on the coin cell. But a 13% drop in a few days isn’t filling with confidence!

Heat meter reports 7.3kW of heat flowing. Heat pump reports 9kW. ?Could I really losing almost 2kW of heat between my garage and the heat pump?

Didn’t even get five years from this UniFi G3. First, the button degraded and cracked and, last week, it finally just stopped working. I hope their cameras last longer!

Resetting my Apple Thread Network
I've always struggled with the reliability of my Apple Thread network. Formed by an AppleTV and four HomePod minis, it worked fine at the start, but after attempting to merge my Aqara thread network and the Apple network, things just sort of stopped working. For a long time, I just avoided using my Apple thread network, preferring to commission devices using Home Assistant and my own home-grown controllers.

Matter Dual Temperature Sensor – Mk2
After last winter's pseudo successful radiator monitoring, I picked this project again at the end of July and decided I'd have another go. This winter would be especially different as my house would be powered by an ASHP (My Heat Pump Installation – Part 1) I wanted to make sure my Heating Monitor was also up and running.

Revision G is working! The larger LDO means there is power enough to commission the device into my Matter controller. Something isn’t right with the Matter code itself, but I commissioned it, which I couldn’t do before, so this is progress!

Seems the RCBO that I have installed with my heat pump is considered to be the wrong type. This leaves me with a problem as I don’t have space for the newer type of RCBO. I will need to see what the installer says.

Updated MBus adapter boards have arrived from @pcbwayofficial.bsky.social . I only placed the order last Wednesday. This one features a more powerful LDO, that hopefully has enough grunt to power the ESP32 and the MBus circuits.

I couldn’t understand why my SDM120 meter wasn’t registering any current. Turns out the electrician didn’t wire it in 🤦‍♂️. Had another sparky put it right. I now see proper values!

One for the surface mount experts: when I mount these little push buttons, they seem to get gummed up by flux. Is there anyway I can avoid that?
