My mum used to give me slices of tomato when I hung around the kitchen as a kid. So I acquired a taste for it early.

This is horrible, and borders on malpractice. It would be bad enough if they weren't the provider in that context. Whoever is that careless with their words can be trusted less to be careful with an individuals entire wellbeing. You deserved so much better.

When I practiced medicine, I was one of the slower doctors because I tried to give each client my best. I burned out quickly and ended up with a lot of moral injury (because I could never do enough). The impersonal / conveyor-belt approach may be more "efficient," but at what cost?

it is really unfortunate, because the feeling of wellbeing on gets from being well cared for (and being aware of that care) is a key part of healing.

[Update] I quit at 7 sonnets because I ran out of things to say. Although I have half of the 15th poem (which is intelligible so far), so if more material arrives I may be able to complete it. It's called "Malaria" and might appear in a joint collection that will be published next year.

(Yes, I know I need a new doctor but the effort involved just makes me shut down whenever I think about it. Current doc is brash and has a horrible bedside manner, but is otherwise competent.)

[Comment about weight and harmful doctors] I was at my heaviest ever the last time I saw my doctor and he asked "Why did you do this?" in an incredulous tone. Like I wanted this. Anyway I'm looking forward to my visit tomorrow and being shamed again ( /s ) , because I've gained even more weight.

Souvankham Thammavongsa has said in interviews that she approached the construction of PICK YOUR COLOUR the way she would have a book of poetry. It made for a delicious reading experience, with each chapter landing the way a great poem would.
