My Aunt Margot was a secretary for 30 years at ITT Gilfillan in Los Angeles. She told me that she accidentally typed a letter for her boss, a Mr. Whitehead, and typed his name at the bottom as “Shithead.” Freudian slip? She couldn’t stop laughing about it.

I read the book, and Bufkinite is correct that it argues that plants are sentient. I’m not studied enough to advocate a position, but we don’t torture plants in the same way we do “farmed” animals. I’m vegan, and I do realize that things have to die so I can live. I’ve chosen the less cruel path.

The subtitle puts me in mind of Sophie, in Styron’s “Sophie’s Choice,” whose love for Schubert’s joyful “Trout Quintet,”is in direct opposition to the horror of her Auschwitz experiences. At the end, it’s Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring” that she listens to. I was sobbing. Thanks for posting!

Marc’s post reminded me of a podcast about why we torture sheep, cows, pigs, chickens, & goats in particular instead of other animals. It’s that they are so relatively trusting and docile. Basically, we hurt the sweethearts of the animal kingdom. It’s why labs use beagles. It hurts to think about.
