Dennis and Lois forged close friendships with too many artists to count, including The Ramones, The Mekons, Oasis, New Order, The Stone Roses, Doves, Badly Drawn Boy, and Happy Mondays, who loved them so much, they immortalized the pair in song.

About 20 years later, I learned a neighbor of mine, Chris Cassidy, had made an excellent bio-documentary, Dennis and Lois, and from watching it, I finally learned how the Spin interview had changed their lives—letting them see themselves as legends on par with the musicians onstage.

I spent a highly caffeinated hour with Dennis and Lois, who were so funny and wise and quotable that I had trouble editing them. I left Jon precious little room to draw, but as always, Jon understood the assignment. (Pinch-and-zoom to read on a phone…they’re worth the effort.)

My long and winding road to Dennis and Lois began 30 years ago, when Kiki Yablon gave me the dream assignment to profile Jon Langford of the Mekons for Chicago magazine. After I moved to Brooklyn and noticed these rock’n’roll elders by the stage at every show I attended, I asked Jon who they were.

I was so sad to hear last night that we’ve lost Lois Kahlert, one half of the immortal duo Dennis and Lois, who spent 50+ years as the greatest rock music fans in New York, Manchester, and anywhere else. Wherever they went, they were with the band—every band.

The graphic designer at Capitol Records was Tommy Steele, and I wish he’d said, “Yeah, I know what we spent on the shoot, and these photos are just ridiculous. I’m doing type-only. And hey, mark my words: within a year or two, you’re going to see The Beatles do a type-only sleeve.”

Weirdly, everything on the cover except the photo looks great. The Cooper Black type and green-yellow Tropicália color scheme would have made a beautiful, minimalistic statement.
