-and there isn’t a simple way to overhaul the way our education system works. But SEN children deserve an education that is on par with their neurotypical classmates while accepting that SEN education can not be a one size fits all and different people will require different levels of support.

-that goes beyond needing exam accommodations. Many students cannot access education in a way that supports their disabilities and needs and they need to be supported to find a different way to learn. I understand the system is under immense strain-

-and having to teach myself gcse content with out any structure or plan. I think we need more options for students who are unable to function in mainstream school, but won’t be accepted into SEN specialist schools. We need more awareness of mental health and neurodivergence in schools-

I went to a grammar school so I certainly can’t speak for all schools, but my school refused to send me work when I was unable to come in on the basis that “we are a face to face school” I was told this was in an effort to encourage me to come in, in fact it lead to me falling behind-

-I had experienced minor struggles with attendance but had remained in school, but by year 10 I was entirely burnt out by a system that had never worked for me while the pressure ramped up and I was being told my worth was dependent on these exams. These facts compounded making school impossible.

As a young person who struggled immensely at school, I think a large contributor to this fact is exhaustion/burnout. By the time I reached year 10 I had been suffering from depression for about 2 years and hadn’t received any substantial treatment despite being on many waiting lists for CAMHS-
