Happy 50th anniversary to ‘Daylight Robbery on the Orient Express’, a comedically self-aware romp deserving of more love than afforded it by the Cannes judges! #Goodies50 That’s 53 episodes down in my Goodies retrospective: www.jacobedwards.id.au/53-daylight-... Next up: Black and White Beauty
The Goodies look up as their ‘boring’ scores (0.0, 0.3, 0.1) appear over their heads.

...in which Gilbert makes the imposter Goodies the butt of the joke! #Goodies50
The imposter Goodies (as French mime artists) prepare to make their getaway in a rowboat. Gilbert the goat, in his wheelchair, crashes into the third imposter, knocking him off the pier and crashing through the boat, sinking it. The real Goodies celebrate (Graeme making mock goat horns).

The detectives emerge in their wheelchairs, followed by the Goodies... and Gilbert the Goat! This ‘incongruous tack-on’ humour was frequently employed by the Super Chaps, though in this instance it’s all set-up for the denouement... #Goodies50
Various famous detectives plus the Goodies and their goat emerge from the train carriage, propelling themselves in wheelchairs.

The Goodies have brought a goat along on their Adventure Tour, for no other purpose than to help them free of their bindings—eventually! #Goodies50 #Goat
Scene #1: The Goodies, tied up, next to an enclosed goat. Dialogue:
Graeme: Tim! The goat. Try the goat.
Tim: What?
Graeme: Try the goat.
Tim: [pause] Not now, thanks.
Graeme: Get the goat to gnaw through your rope.
Tim: What’s the fun in that?

Scene #2: Tim, now free, inquires after Graeme, who is backed up to the goat enclosure. Dialogue:
Tim: How are you getting along with the rope, Graeme?
Graeme: Okay but— Why didn’t you tell me the goat had turned round?

Scene #3: Tim and Graeme are now free. Tim inquires after Bill, who is trying to convince the goat to gnaw through his ropes. Graeme bends down... and does the gnawing himself! Dialogue:
Tim: Bill, has that goat got through your rope yet?
Bill: No, no way.
Tim: Oh, come on. Come on, Gilbert. Get down there. Come on. Go at it, son!
Graeme: Tim. Tim, we’re free, right? Never mind the goat. I’ll do it.

When the Kojaks go to use the lavatory while the train is stopped in Lapland, Bill suffers a predictable (though perfectly timed) fate! #Goodies50
Bill, stinking, wet and dishevelled. Graeme hushing him. Dialogue:
Bill: Oh, shut up! Now come on, please. Honestly. It was snowing, wasn’t it? It was snowing! So I have to shelter somewhere, don’t I? So what do I do? I climb under the train, don’t I? I’m lying there under the train; all of a sudden: swoosh! I get a ruddy great load of—
Graeme: Shoosh, shoosh, shoosh, shoosh.
000
Jacob Edwards @toastyvogon.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Graeme quickly loses his grip on the train’s imaginary journey (much to the consternation of Bill, lugging props up and down the platform outside)! #Goodies50
Graeme presents Tim dressed as a young Italian lady. Graeme tries to communicate where they are to Bill, looking in from outside the train. Monologue:
Graeme: And now, regrettably, we must say Au revoir, France, because it’s Guten Morgen, —Italy!

Bill and Tim lock horns in a delightfully silly battle of language! #Goodies50 #Scones
Bill dressed as a tree trunk; Tim doing an owl impersonation.
Dialogue from the episode:
Bill: Fear not. We at Goodies Hols have devised our Worldwide Adventure Tours with a difference, the difference being: nobody goes more than six miles south of Cricklewood. To wit—
Tim: [owl impersonation:] T’woo!
Bill: What I mean is...
{soon after}
Bill: ...whilst, but a scone’s through away (‘scone’s throw’!)—
Tim: ‘Scone’s-throw’.
Bill: Twit.
Tim: [renewed owl impersonation:] T’woo!

50 years ago today the Goodies tried to dupe the Detectives Club, only to find themselves embroiled in a daring train heist… and gatecrashing the international festival of Le Boring! Tonight I shall mime gleefully to their derailment… #Goodies50 #SuperChapsThree #DaylightRobberyontheOrientExpress

Happy 50th anniversary to ‘Hype Pressure’, an episode the ABC declined to screen... and for good reason! #Goodies50 #SuperChapsThree #HypePressure That’s 52 episodes down in my Goodies retrospective: www.jacobedwards.id.au/52-hype-pres... Next up: Daylight Robbery on the Orient Express

This isn’t quite aimless nostalgia/self-referencing. The giant Dougal also returns to interact retrospectively, and we’re given a look behind the scenes... #Goodies50 #GiantDougal #KittenKong
Dougal crashes through the manor wall, then chases Kitten Kong through the city. Three puppeteers manipulate the scene from below.

Kitten Kong redux? The lads see fit to reprise one of their most iconic moments. #Goodies50 #KittenKong

Does Godwin’s law apply to comedy? Given my assertion that Hype Pressure marks a nadir in the Goodies’ run, perhaps it is fitting that they invoked Hitler (albeit to have him shat upon by Alfred Hitchcock–cued birds)! #Goodies50 #GodwinsLaw
Hitler, speech-making in front of a Nazi flag, is shat upon by birds cued by Alfred Hitchcock.

Flower Song is one of the better executed pieces, and if judged as an unintegrated skit would be hard to fault! #Goodies50 #FlowerSong
Bill and Graeme, as hippies, attempt to sing ‘Flower Song’ while Tim launches effects at them.

Dialogue from the show:
Bill: [singing:] Well the answer’s blowing in the wind...
Tim: Cue the wind!
Bill: ...how they fall, how rain falls; and you say what must be, must be, the passport to democracy, you have to fight to set us free, it seems to me it’s just a load of—
Tim: Cue the balls!

Apropos of nothing, a Google image search on the portrait of Elizabeth II produces visual matches not of the queen but rather the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. Make of this what you will. #Goodies50 #WeepingAngels #DoctorWho
Two pictures of the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who’s ‘Blink’ (2007). Tim in striped suit, with thin moustache, coordinating the rock ‘n’ roll revival. Bill in Goodies tee-shirt objects.

Even the good bits seem a bit forced this episode! #Goodies50
Tim sits comatose upon his silver throne. Bill looks on expectantly as Graeme waves burning bank note under his nose. Dialogue:
Graeme: Don’t worry, Bill. Don’t worry. Here’s something guaranteed to bring him round... [sets fire to a banknote and waves it under Tim’s nose] Tim, look at that. Tiiiim. Tim-Tim-Tim...
Bill: Oh dear. Well, I’m afraid, Gray-bags, you have wasted your money.
Graeme: Oh, no I haven’t. You see, that fiver was— TIM’S! [no reaction] He must be dead!

Tim: “Still, there’s no arm in it...” The skeleton judge is a well-executed gag, but for the most part Tim’s gameshow is funny in name only. #NewFaces #NewFaeces #Goodies50

Bill: “I can do the folk voice, you know. Yes, put one hand over your ear so you can’t hear...” Comparing Bill’s nail-scratching rendition of ‘As I Walked Out One Morning In May’ to that given by the lads a year-and-a-half earlier in ‘Wacky Wales’, listeners may well despair... #Goodies50
Tim, Graeme and Bill sing ‘As I Walked Out One Morning In May’ in ‘Wacky Wales’; Bill butchers the same song in ‘Hype Pressure’.

50 years ago today, the Goodies took a bizarrely unfocussed and unfunny dig at pop stardom, 1950s culture and— directorial megalomania? Tonight I shall wince my way through it and cherry-pick what highlights I can... #Goodies50 #SuperChapsThree #HypePressure

Gloriously absurd as ever. While being hunted, Jaws-style, by a giant cod, Tim and Bill try to hunt it in turn... with fishing net, cod-puppet and wooden mallet! #Goodies50
A giant cod, lurking Jaws-style underwater... turns out to be a hand-puppet attached to Tim (who is also holding a mallet). Bill stands in a boat, fishing net at the ready. The real Brian crashes down on the jetty.

Few people could commit to a scene like Timbo! #Goodies50 #YouStupidFish
Tim punches the waters of a fish tank.
Monologue:
Tim: You stupid fish! You’re nothing but a fish, you fish! You’re all the same, you rotten lousy fish. You’re stupid. What are you? You’re stuuu-pid! When was the last time a fish was Prime Minister? Name me one fish with a degree in economics and philosophy; just one. Has Prince Charles’ name ever been romantically linked with a fish? Take that, you fish! You stupid fish!

Such is the exuberance of Bill’s ‘cod get ready to die’ kill-the-cod dance, that Graeme can’t help joining in... before remembering where his loyalties lie! #Goodies50 #killthecod
Bill, with top hat and gun, prepares to shoot Brian the Cod. Graeme joins in the dance before snapping out of it and preventing the execution.

Before he hit upon the idea of making fish cross, Graeme was content to coddle (ha!) Brian in that creature’s fast-growing infancy... using the same lip-fingered burbling sounds he advocated for Bill’s encounter with Sir Joshua Makepeace! #Goodies50

Fishing at the North Pole affords the Super Chaps yet another opportunity to make use of a portable hole-in-the-ground...! #Goodies50

That Gilbert the goldfish has his name embroidered on his bowl cover is a nice touch... and makes for a more striking visual when Bill uses it for a napkin! (Do all Gilberts get eaten in the Goodies?) Graeme once again uses Bill’s hair as a towel. #Goodies50 #RIPGilbert
Bill lifts the ‘Gilbert’-embroidered cover off the fishbowl; uses it as a napkin. Graeme wipes his hands on Bill’s hair.

We should probably take Graeme’s cod-clobbering of his Eskimo adversary as an homage to Monty Python’s fish-slapping dance, rather than an attempt at one-upmanship. #Goodies50 #MontyPython #FishSlappingDance

This evening I learnt that Bill Oddie has passed away. I am sitting here listening to the Cricklewood Tapes, grooving along despite the sadness; marvelling at how often Bill’s songs still pop into my head, and how much his voice underscores each episode of my favourite ever TV show. Such memories!

At some point, England might like to consider just choosing the best players in each position: the batsmen who'll score the most runs, not the quickest. The bowlers who'll be most effective with the ball, not the bat. The best keeper, even if he scores five runs fewer and slightly slower. #AUSvENG
