When former Assistant Grand Master is awaiting sentence for child sex abuse offences, you’d think the Order would want to keep a low profile. Sort of political Streisand Effect?

Almost feel sorry for Shan Masood. Comes in to a lost cause: series all but lost, openers both out for ducks, and with miserable scores in series. But digs in, stops the rot and almost scores a ton. Out to a very good catch.

In my imagination I see a Mike Peyton cartoon of crew of a capsized yacht clinking to its hull in Fastnet-like conditions, with RNLI alongside. Coxswain is hailing crew, saying that to comply with Platform Patriot, crew must show ID to prove they have right to enter UK before they can be rescued.

As far as I am aware, no Irish nationalists have ever attacked an RNLI station or crew in the Republic. Irish Free State urged RNLI to stay. RNLI retains the Royal in its name in Ireland. Whereas English nationalists seem all too keen to do exactly that.

I suppose the acid test for the assertion that memoir=fiction (cf autobiography=fact) will be the first successful defence of a libel action alleging libellous quotation in a memoir. Otherwise only a publisher’s puffery?

Disappointed that an ex-in house lawyer (and one in my field, too) goes public like this. What does it achieve? You wouldn’t do this in business; you’d flag it to the new boss’s team, to save the business embarrassment. After all, we in housers want to the seen as trusted advisers, no?

I wonder what the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury at the time the VIP Lane was established thinks about the subsequent waste of £10 billion, given their current mantra of “cut welfare” to fund, for example, their claim that there is a £5 billion “black hole” in defence spending plans?

Silence of Sarah Wynn-Williams is reported to be effect of restrictions under a California interim arbitration award obtained by Meta. There is also mention in some reports about an employment settlement with non-disclosure terms. A surprise, as I had thought CA anti-SLAPP laws were the strongest.

So today I’m hearing a lot about welfare reform, now as a euphemism for benefit cuts. Why nothing about tackling causes of increasing poor health? This is good on the what, but I miss the why: The role of changing health ifs.org.uk/publications...

If I were PM, I’d simply piss off and distance myself irretrievably from Reform (and any further erosion of refugee (aka “illegal immigrant”) rights) by sending in an Art 49 TEU application. No plan? No matter. Didn’t see much planning before Art 50 TEU notice went in.

Beginning to think I should use a stop watch to time how long it takes Mel Stride to mention his only solution to anything posed to him by an interviewer (being to cut welfare benefits - never with any details of which ones and by how much).

Not seen this before, but present SCOTUS seems to like citing very early E&W authority to justify bollocks, with precedent we’ve all moved on from in E&W. Is there a legal equivalent term for the Chortlemuffin effect?

I often wonder how the American voters could have been so stupid as to vote for Trump, given the predictable outcome. But then I remember the horror of turning on the radio at 6am on 24 June 2016 and hearing the referendum result, and realise that we are no different in the UK.

Badenoch has a touching faith in PM powers. Couple of weeks ago, it was to increase number of Type 45 destroyers. This week it is to create operational North Sea gas drilling wells in North Sea. Starmer can be criticised for many things, but being unable to time travel is not one of them. #PMQs

Commando comics’ simplified history of WW1 and WW2 stated that Yanks always turned up very late to any “scrap,” once all the heavy fighting had been done by brave Tommies, and would then claimed all the credit. So 1970s schoolboys would claim UK hesitating to join USA Iran adventure is payback.

Wonder how many Commonwealth MPs there are, who Farage will certainly go after under his disenfranchisement plans?
Who can stand as an MP?

To stand as a candidate in a UK Parliamentary General Election you need to be at least 18 years old and be either:

a British citizen or
a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or
a citizen of a commonwealth country who does not require leave to enter or remain in the UK, or has indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
Who is disqualified from standing as an MP?

Certain groups of people are not allowed to stand, these include:

members of the police forces
members of the armed forces
civil servants and judges
people who are subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order in England or Wales or a debt relief restrictions order
people who have been adjudged bankrupt in Northern Ireland
people who have had their estate sequestrated in Scotland.

Whilst this may be an appropriate response for an AG of the current USA administration, I don’t recommend it for any LiP (or counsel!) appearing before an overworked judge in a court in E&W.
