Part 4 continued... Finally, we asked whether our respondents knew about the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) standards for sharing data in neuroscience. Some did, some didn't, and a few were experts!

Part 4: What Data Do You Share And How? Most of us share something of our data - usually just in the paper itself, the supplementary materials or on osf.io. Relatively few upload their data to subject-specific repositories (none, in fact!)

Part 3 continued... What do we measure from the EMG, and how good at it are we? Not surprisingly, everyone measures MEP amplitudes, but a few other features are measured regularly. Most users feel quite confident / expert in analysing their EMG data, but we have the full range of expertise:

Part 3 continued... How do we analyse our data and what do we look out for? Mostly Matlab and R, but also CED software. We take a wide range of settings and filters into account.

Part 3: Do You Record EMG? And If So, Tell Us More! Most do surface EMG with sticky bipolar electrodes, a few use high-density arrays and one uses in-dwelling electrodes. We use a wide range of hardware, with the most-common being CED systems. (For these questions, multiple responses were given.)

Part 2: What kind of TMS Studies Do You Do? The respondents basically do everything possible, using TMS hardware from five different manufacturers and controlling their experiments with four main software tools. They combine TMS with a very wide range of other methods.

Part 1: Who Are You? We got a good range of responses, from one undergraduate student up to six full professors. About a quarter are post-docs and a quarter assistant professors. Two thirds of respondents are UK-based, the remainder in Europe, North America or Asia.

The first draft of the #TMS@40 paper is being assembled, not on my living room floor, but on a computer. Hope to get the first draft to all 57 authors this week..! 🙏✍️🙏👨‍💻🙏🕚🙏 #BrainStim #TMS #OpenScience
Twenty-nine folded pieces of paper of various sizes are scattered on an old, dirty, brown carpet somewhere in The Midlands of England. Each piece contains text selected and physically cut from a printed corpus of 23,000 words generated by the wonderful attendees of the even wonderfuller TMS@40 Workshop, held in Birmingham England, at the end of April, 2025. These printed snowflakes of neuroscience will be blown together into a paper reporting our 'position' on how TMS research should adapt to the age of open science. Watch this space. I don't mean the carpet, that would be weird. I mean it metaphorically. Literally speaking, you should watch this account for updates about the paper, and then read the paper please. Thank you. Fin.

Fun day ahead, turning a 2-day #TMS #BrainStim workshop into a paper draft!
76 sheets of A5 paper laid out on my living room floor, with 23,000 words written by 55 attendees of a 2-day hackathon. A large language model on my floor 😅
