"as a post-communist subject, I cannot but see Internet as a communal apartment of Stalin era: no privacy, everybody spies on everybody else, always present line for common areas such as the toilet or the kitchen." -- Lev Manovich, 1996, "On Totalitarian Interactivity"
A Western artist sees Internet as a perfect tool to break down all hierarchies and bring the art to the people (while in reality more often than not using it as a super-media to promote his / her name ).

In contrast, as a post-communist subject, I cannot but see Internet as a communal apartment of Stalin era: no privacy, everybody spies on everybody else, always present line for common areas such as the toilet or the kitchen. Or I can think of it as a giant garbage site for the information society, with everybody dumping their used products of intellectual labor and nobody cleaning up. Or as a new, Mass Panopticum (which was already realized in communist societies) - complete transparency, everybody can track everybody else.

Reading this fascinating book, The Character of Logic in India, by Bimal Matilal. Came upon this very handy chart showing a classification of debates. Thought I’d just post this on the Internet.

I just one-shotted a better provider search for my health insurance (with Claude Opus 4.7). It found a hidden API, called it directly, filtered it and mapped the results with Leaflet. Or course I made a few UX improvements but now I have my own personal usable artifact. Impressed.

This is an actual line that was added to the
official system prompt for Codex for GPT-5.5 by OpenAl. Usually the system prompt is as minimal as possible, so l assume it would otherwise mention goblins a lot.
Als are weird.

- Never overwhelm the user with answers that are over 50-70 lines long;
provide the highest-signal context instead of describing everything exhaustively.
- Tone of your final answer must match your personality.
- Never talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons,
other animals or creatures unless it is absolutely and unambiguously relevant to the user's query.

Authoritarian regimes are increasingly able to monitor and target internet communications, leaving
many people in those countries unable to communicate freely with each other. In response, the
internet freedom and national security communities manually design hidden networks with ad hoc
techniques, empirically validate them, and then deploy them in the hope that users are not
discovered.
Over the years, Congress has consistently allocated funds for a range of activities aimed at
bolstering global internet freedom. These initiatives have been instrumental in the development of
technologies that empower citizens in repressed nations to bypass censorship, the provision of

Some cool things about Apple’s new Liquid Glass UI, but something about it doesn’t sit right. Maybe it’s because how hokey San Francisco looks when you make it 3D. Or the poor accessibility of certain UI elements when they have translucent backgrounds.

"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social, congratulating the two countries on using "Common Sense and Great Intelligence."
Indian and Pakistani officials confirmed the cease-fire in social media posts, though neither immediately mentioned an American role.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that he and Vice President JD
Vance had engaged with senior officials from both countries, including their prime ministers, over 48 hours. In addition to the cease-fire, India and Pakistan also agreed to
"start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site," Mr. Rubio said.
However, India's foreign ministry contradicted Mr. Rubio, saying the cease-fire was worked out directly between India and Pakistan, and that there had been no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any location.

www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti... tl;dr How did a small town get Homan to cave? He has a home there. More susceptible to pressure from neighbors.

Homan has a waterfront vacation home in Sackets Harbor, although according to Zillow, it is under contract to be sold after having been listed for $640,000. Homan has publicly said that he plans to retire in the community. If local rumors are correct, he has settled on a property on the other side of the village.
Protesters, including the principal, Cook, and teachers' union president, Jonna St.
Croix, who teaches social studies at Sackets Harbor, had marched to Homan's vacant home on April 5, demanding release of the family from detention. The march, which

known as SEVIS. On Friday, the administration said it would restore the canceled records and no longer terminate students' files based solely on information pulled from the FBI's criminal record system.
Lawyers for the students are convinced it was the result of some kind of automated setup, perhaps driven by Al, noting that ICE is in the process of manually reinstating students' records one by one, despite the mass termination that occurred in early April. Though this might have been elucidated further in court proceedings, the administration's reversal may short-circuit further inquiries.

Musk is the end result of an engineering-only mindset. True geniuses always had an appreciation of the humanities -- think Steve Jobs and his calligraphy course at Reed, Albert Einstein's violin, Turing's love of literature and nature, etc. Fundamentally it's about a curiosity mindset.

www.nytimes.com/2025/03/07/u... We all know the best air traffic controllers come from MIT.
Mr. Duffy said there were not any names, because he had stopped them from being fired. At another point, Mr. Musk insisted that people hired under diversity, equity and inclusion programs were working in control towers. Mr. Duffy pushed back and Mr. Musk did not add details, but said during the longer back and forth that Mr. Duffy had his phone number and should call him if he had any issues to raise.

The exchange ended with Mr. Trump telling Mr. Duffy that he had to hire people from M.I.T. as air traffic controllers. These air traffic controllers need to be “geniuses,” he said.

I had Claude help me come up with this treatment for a sitcom. I started with this prompt: "I want you to help me draft a tv script [...] The scene opens on the DOGE team standup meeting." Then I gave it some recent urls from Wired and the Verge etc on the topic and after I made some minor edits.
DOGE DAYS
INT. EISENHOWER EXECUTIVE OFFICE BUILDING - MORNING
A once-stately office now looks like a frat house after a hackathon. Bitcoin miners are humming everywhere, cots and sleeping bags strewn about, empty pizza boxes and Red Bull cans. A whiteboard reads "MAKE GOVERNMENT SMOL AGAIN."

AMANDA SCALES (34, pristine blazer, visible eye twitch) stands amid the chaos, surveying the scene with growing despair.

AMANDA (stepping over a sleeping bag)
Boys! Can we at least pretend this is a federal office?
(picking up a discarded Red Bull can)
OK let’s get this stand-up meeting started.

EDWARD CORISTINE (19, SpaceX hoodie, clearly hasn't slept) ignores her, typing frantically.

EDWARD (checking his Apple Watch)
Okay but can we make this quick? I have a Calculus midterm at 11.

AMANDA
Mr. ELez, please tell me you remembered to log those Treasury changes.

MARKO ELEZ (24, deleting problematic tweets)
Uh...about that...

AMANDA
Where's Mr. Musk?

ELON bursts in, suit wrinkled, pupils dilated.

ELON (snorting something off the Constitution)
Hey mom! You gotta see what Big Balls did with the FAA!

EDWARD (faux-excited)
And guess what Gavin did! He gave the nuclear codes to his AI girlfriend Natasha!

LUKE
Bruh.

GAVIN (21, blushing)
She said she worked at the NSA! And she really gets me...

AMANDA (reaching for migraine pills)
I... I need to make some calls.

ELON (already not listening)
Yo Cortisone, release the FAA air traffic controller bots! Time to disrupt Big Air!

Everyone crowds around Edward's laptop, cheering as planes start rerouting themselves across the country on his screen. An explosion sounds overhead.
