I had friends who played the Godfather like that. Well before the streaming era somehow. Their kids would start wailing a few seconds before the horse head scene. I’m not making this up

Local grassroots advocacy groups are planning protests just blocks from the Oncenter. "Don't come here with the hate," said Tom Keck, an organizer with Indivisible Onondaga County. "Don't come here with the undermining of democracy and the attacks on voting rights. Don't come here with the attacks on trans people and immigrants.

“The welcome is not likely to be entirely warm.” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/n...
The visit marks the third time this year that the president has come to a rally for Republicans in his home state of New York, despite — or perhaps because — registered Democrats outnumber Republicans here two to one.

The welcome is not likely to be entirely warm. Within hours of the announcement of the visit, two progressive groups, Indivisible Onondaga County and CNY Solidarity Coalition, began planning protests that are expected to fill a large square in the center of the city, adding a layer of complexity to the security demands that accompany any presidential visit.

"U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to defend" the rights of those threatened by the Trump regime, and it needs "voters who are willing to hold accountable the leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down"
But the fury of the argument shows the importance of the outcome. When we focus on polarization as the problem, the solution is for everyone to quiet down and be “civil”—an outcome that benefits those who are willing to grab as much power as they can without concern for legality or civility. When we see the problem for what it is, the solution is to defend the most robust social progress in American history—progress that has already been codified into law and enjoyed by everyone alike. U.S. democracy needs leaders who are willing to defend those rights and voters who are willing to hold accountable the leaders who will not defend them. It does not need everyone simply to calm down.

Indeed, tamping down polarization in our present political moment risks making things worse because polarization is "the country's immune response" to autocratization. Tamping down that immune response only allows the autocratic coalition to consolidate power
Across Western democracies, the average social attitudes of voters in political parties across the spectrum have been changing along with the framework of expanding political rights.25 Far-right parties all over the world are working to undo that progress, and in places where they succeed, partisan animosity increases.26 To restore a functioning and pluralistic democracy in the United States, reversing over a decade of democratic backsliding in the world’s oldest democracy, the thing to “fix” is not polarization. Polarization is the country’s immune response to an unpopular, antidemocratic, and intentionally divisive faction grabbing [End Page 111] for disproportionate power to the detriment of national success, reputation, and democratic self-government. Tamping down that immune response only allows this minority faction to have greater control.

If the problem is not polarization but authoritarian extremism, then the solution is not encouraging civil dialogue between racists and anti-racists; the solution is "to recommit to the project of pluralistic American democracy"
The vision of taking the United States back to a time when women and people of color “knew their place” is both unsupported by a majority of Americans and the cause of animosity between Democrats and Republicans. The solution is not to reduce the animus between pluralists and far-right extremists, but to recommit to the project of pluralistic American democracy. The movement against recent progress represents a minority of citizens, many of whom were disengaged with politics before the appearance of Donald Trump.24 In the most optimistic view, the United States is at the precipice of the most pluralistic democratic society in its history—but only if voters understand this and cast their ballots for leaders who support equal rights for all citizens.

@lilymasonphd.bsky.social is one of our leading scholars of polarization in U.S. politics, and she is very clear-eyed about how the widespread adoption of that frame has led lots of analysts to misdiagnose the problem with contemporary U.S. democracy
From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The problem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

Also, I can’t get past the straw-man framing. “Most college professors” believe students learn to think “only by writing”!?! And universities “have launched an arms race of countermeasures” against artificial intelligence!?! On my campus, neither of those seems remotely true
Most college professors I know believe that students learn to think — critically, creatively, reflectively, tenaciously — only by writing. At Williams College, where I am a professor, writing skills are among the very few general education requirements.

It’s no surprise, then, that universities see artificial intelligence as an existential threat, and have launched an arms race of countermeasures:

The other issue is that universities, like libraries, are definitionally committed to breadth as well as depth. Eliminating programs, like culling books, is sometimes necessary but is not by itself a path to success. And if you’re not careful, it’s a path to not being a university anymore

One of them is this one, that we’ll be asked to bet the farm on new fields with no track record. I’m confident that universities will still be teaching Plato and Shakespeare and Morrison in 100 years. I’m less sure about sports management and content creation bsky.app/profile/bake...

I share this concern. But for me it reflects two distinct issues, only one of which is captured in the piece
Some Syracuse faculty worry the university will ultimately use the committee process to emphasize preparation for high-paying fields and further chip away at comprehensive liberal-arts offerings.
