I’ve seen a lot of fine rocks in my day, but among my favorites are the 12.5-million-year-old intrusions at Torres del Paine, Chile. The younger, light-colored volcanic rock Oreo’d itself between the darker, 94-million-year-old sedimentary rock. #InternationalRockDay #Geology #Patagonia 📸: me

Among these specimens is the 61-million-year-old Sequiwaimanu rosieae. It was reported in 2018 and excavated from the famous Waipara Greensand in Canterbury, New Zealand. These rocks hold the world’s first penguins, which evolved shortly after the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. 📸 Gerald Mayr

Large stone fragment of a monumental building at Eleusis, Greece. The Ancient Greeks hosted a festival here every September to celebrate the return of Persephone to her mother Demeter, goddess of agriculture. 🧪🏺 The festival lasted until 395 CE. 📷: me #AncientGreece #EleusinianMysteries
