Some place in the Italian countryside in 1904
"Il Sole" (The Sun) by Italian artist Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo. It's a divisionist painting, which means that the light radiating from the rising sun is divided into thousands of very thin shards of light.

Yes I know what a dot is in this context, I'm just free associating. Here are the poem and painting in full.
A page from the August 1915 issue of Rogue, with only this poem printed on it:

Houses hold virgins
The door's on the chain

Plumb streets with hearts
Bore curtains with eyes

Virgins without dots
Stare beyond probability

See the men pass
Their hats are not ours
We take a walk
They are going somewhere
And they may look everywhere
Men's eyes look into things
Our eyes look out

A great deal of ourselves
We offer to the mirror
Something less to the confessional
The rest to Time
There is so much Time
Everything is full of it
Such a long time

Virgins may whisper
Transparent nightdresses made all of lace
Virgins may squeak
My dear I should faint
Flutter . . . . . flutter . . . . flutter . . . .
. . . . " And then the man - "
Wasting our giggles
For we have no dots

We have been taught
Love is a god
White with soft wings
Nobody shouts
Virgins for sale
Yet where are our coins
For buying a purchaser
Love is a god
Marriage expensive
A secret well kept
Makes the noise of the world
Nature's arms spread wide
Making room for us
Room for all of us
Somebody who was never
a virgin
Has bolted the door
Put curtains at our windows
See the men pass
They are going somewhere

Fleshes like weeds
Sprout in the light
So much flesh in the world
Wanders at will

Some behind curtains
Throbs to the night
Bait to the stars
Spread it with gold
And you carry it home
Against your shirt front
To . . . . . . . a shaded light
With the door locked
Against virgins who
Might scratch.
A woman takes a walk on the Champs-Elysees. The men have high hats. One of them is looking at the woman, the others are going places, using horse-drawn cars.

I suppose Renoir was present at the Bal de l'Assommoir, where Manet introduced Moore to Zola (as I just learned from reading George's first letter to Émile). All I could gather from contemporary press reports was that "all the artists of Paris" were there, and also Turgenev.

From Men of Maize. In the English translation I found, "los ijares del pensiamento" becomes "the spurs of the mind", which makes no sense to me. In the French translation I'm reading, the senses are the stirrups of thought ("les étriers de la pensée"), which is just as wrong and twice as weird.
The full watercolor. We see that the head is as big as a man, and it sits on a black horse. Blood is coming out of the severed neck. The trail of blood on the ground seems to indicate that the horse is moving backwards.

"Fill my head, oh crimson, with you precious juice Make it distill a thousand crimson tears Until, meditating your mysterious meaning, With the blood drawn from my eyes, I redden these songs" Jean de la Ceppède, sonnet 63 Translated by Mary Ann Caws 🖼️ Fra Angelico, Christ Crowned with Thorns
As you'd expect, there's blood streaming down Jesus's brow (from the thorn wounds). But the white of his eyes is also reddened, as if his conjunctiva were inflamed. More likely, his tears have become bloody. His gaze is the gaze of a man in pain, and, in my opinion, of a man in doubt.
Tempera and gold leaf, mid 15th century, attribution to Fra Angelico seems generally accepted as of today.

Ah yes my bad, I just tried it with my own eyes and it seems I'm able to unfocus the background without having an object in the foreground to focus on. Perhaps those who can't are people over 50 whose accommodative power has declined.

Based on what you're saying I would venture to say you do have hypermetropia. When your eyes stop accommodating, everything's a blur. An emmetropic eye does not need to accommodate to sea distant objects clearly, and it cannot "unfocus", it can only choose to focus on some closer object.

Hannah Höch : Augen (Eyes), 1967 Collage on card 12.25 × 16.75 in | 31 × 41.5 cm Worthington Fine Art, Chicago
The present work is an outstanding example of Hannah Höch’s arresting collages and her manipulation of imagery. Constructed with expertly spliced photographic paper, the composition consists of three collaged, interlocking eyes at the centre, held together by bright yellow and orange electron-like spirals of photomontage surrounding them. In doing so, she creates a centrifugal composition that spins in disarray, disrupting cyclical forms and reinforcing a chaotic yet purposeful energy to the composition furthermore revealing her fascination and interest in the occult sciences and the biocosmic realm.

By transforming once recognisable images, piecing together bits of published material into one large amorphous form, the present work conveys an interest in abstraction that pervades Höch's mature works. This collage is a testament to the artist's ability to create powerful images that shake up the way one sees the world and art.

Hannah Höch first began experimenting with printed paper alongside fellow artist Raoul Hausmann in 1918. During a trip to the Baltic Sea in 1918, Höch and Hausmann discovered the popular custom of pasting a photograph of one’s own face onto pictures of Prussian soldiers. The practice would lead them to create their first collages, designed to highlight the absurdity and fragmentation within Weimar Germany. Höch’s wry and subversive works soon aligned her with the Berlin Dada group, a circle of predominantly male artists who critiqued German culture and politics following World War I. Höch exhibited in major Dada exhibitions, including the First International Dada Fair in Berlin in 1920.
