Because the old guard has made their $$ and now wants to keep ALL of it and social programs, entitlements, and taxing higher brackets threatens that. They’d rather keep us uneducated, starving for work, too busy and poor to protest, and too sick to care about politics and big finance.

Absolutely, inevitabilism is nonsense, otherwise big tech wouldn’t spend billions on trying to grab and maintain our attentions. We have agency, still. Been reading a lot of Cory Doctorow’s work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and it’s really transformed my choices of consumption. Big fan.

Hows about some Alice Munro, or Margaret Atwood, or Don Delillo or Raymond Carver? I love snacking on short fiction between novels😁

I’ve never seen Mean Girls but I do love Don Delillo’s writing and I do thoroughly enjoy a rando cultural literary reference in a teen comedy😅

I have yet to read East of Eden and I’m looking forward to it. I’m in love with his novellas so much. His skill at navigating tension and X-raying into the human soul was sublime. The Pearl is brilliant and I just finished The Moon Is Down. I so wish there was more of a market for novellas today.

I re-read this again earlier this year and forgot how brilliant it is. How she stayed in Scout’s head yet we knew how the entire town operated, her father and his court case, it’s impact on the town, and all the wonderful wisdoms she dropped w/ such sneaky authenticity. What a monument💯
