I mean that's not ideal energyinnovation.org/report/ohio-...
This Energy Policy Simulator (EPS) analysis projects Ohio impacts from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) as well as energy policy decisions of the 119th Congress and Trump Administration since January 2025.

Energy prices continue rising, worsening the affordability crisis facing the state’s residents. The EPS modeling shows federal policy decisions will increase energy costs, slow economic growth, and increase air pollution and healthcare costs:

Ohio households will pay an additional $27 billion for energy – an average of $530 per household in 2035 and $690 in 2040.
Cutting policies that drive transportation sector innovation and efficiency will inflate gasoline prices in Ohio 16 percent in 2035 and 30 percent in 2040, atop upward pressure from the Iran war.
OBBBA and federal cuts to domestic manufacturing and innovation will cost Ohio’s economy 6,800 jobs per year on average over the next decade, in addition to the 9,500 clean energy jobs lost since January 2025.
Slowing down electrification and domestic energy manufacturing will lower GDP, spilling into other economic sectors. Ohio’s economy will lose $920 million in GDP in 2030, with annual losses peaking at $3.9 billion by 2037.
Worsening local air pollution will raise healthcare costs in Ohio by $1.3 billion, with annual increases of $130 million in 2035 and $160 million in 2040, contributing to rising household costs alongside rising energy prices and goods inflation.

From Adam Becker's More Everything Forever:

astronomer Lucianne Walkowicz. "Because think about what an asteroid strike is. It's something that comes out of the blue, that you have absolutely no way of preventing, that you didn't know was going to happen. And I think the reason that you don't hear climate change in the mouths of people who [say] we need to create a backup for humanity-maybe they will talk about it in another forum, but they don't talk about those two things togetheris because climate change implies human responsibility. Climate change implies actions that they are responsible for." Rather than face that responsibility,
billionaires are searching for a way to avoid it. absolutely despise this idea of backing up humanity... (Billionaires] have essentially the most means and the most power to do something about the problems that we actually face, whether they be change or income inequality," they say. "This idea of backing up humanity is about getting out of responsibility by making it seem that we have this Get Out of Jail Free card."

I think this part of @nathaliemarechal.net's piece is critical
Such skepticism may become even more important should Democrats regain at least one chamber of Congress in the midterms, and throughout the 2028 campaign cycle. While effective altruists have largely been displaced by effective accelerationists under Trump, they were deeply influential throughout the Biden administration, both in Congress and at the White House, and are poised for a comeback. For moderate, industry-friendly establishment Democrats, it is much easier to maintain healthy skepticism vis-a-vis cartoonish effective accelerationist villains than enthusiastic idealists gushing about "human flourishing" while worrying about "existential risk"-particularly when those same idealists have deep pockets. It will be up to civil society to remind elected leaders that AGI/ASI is far from a certainty, and that we shouldn't base policy decisions on the assumption that it is inevitable, or even desirable. Once you understand that the broligarchs are eugenicists who care more about hypothetical, future AI-enhanced lives than about today's population and believe that it is their right and their duty to sit atop a brutally hierarchical society where cold, computational "rationality" trumps human rights and dignity, a lot of things start making sense. I liked this passage from Jill Lepore's new book "The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State"
Nearly two and a half centuries ago, Americans decided that societies of people are indeed capable of governing themselves by reflection and choice rather than being ruled by accident and force. But the question has returned, slightly revised: Are humans to abandon government by consent for government by machine? The United States offers a chilling case study, an illustration of how the automation of politics decays democracy, producing an alienated, polarized electorate mistrustful of elected officials who in turn are paralyzed by their ability to calculate, in advance, the likely consequences of their actions, down to the last lost primnary or donated dollar. Instead of making decisions based on principles or values, legislators and other policymakers make decisions based on predicted outcomes; conscientious leadership, under these conditions, proves all but impossible. Between 1958 and 2024, and for reasons that, to be sure, had to do with far more than technological change, the percentage of Americans who said they trusted the U.S. government to do what was right most of the time fell from more than 70 percent to barely above 20 percent.2 Much the same was true elsewhere. In 2002, the

From @adambecker.bsky.social:
This several convenient people technology, such rhetoric offers absolution for
consequences of their inventions, because they were only uncovering the already extant course of technology, rather than steering it themselves. When there's no room for human agency, there's no room for moral responsibility either. And if the future of technology really is on rails, then much can be revealed simply by careful examination ofthe purportedly inevitable route-a route that leads straight to the vision of the Singularity. This offers the promise of not only accurately predicting the future (and the sense of control that comes with), but also (and more importantly) endless life in a future filled with the transcendence and control that characterize the ideology of technological salvation. With the end of nature and the advent of a universe that is simply one enormous, artificial computer where we live in still-more-artificial worlds generated by those computers-the promise of control is total, especially for those who know how to control computers. This is a fantasy of a world where the single most important thing, the thing that literally determines all aspects of reality, is computer programming. All of humanity, running on a computer, until the end of time.

I have no idea why but I keep thinking about this anecdote, and it makes me laugh every time (From @vermontgmg.bsky.social's The Devil Reached Towards the Sky)
Col. Kenneth D. Nichols: For the electromagnetic process, silver could substitute at the ratio of eleven to ten. Col. James C. Marshall: I then said to somebody, "Where can we get silver?" Somebody said, “Well how about getting ll this stuff from |Treasury Secretary Mr. [Henry] Morgenthau? He's got I don't know how many hundreds of millions of dollars worth of silver up there at West Point."
Col. Kenneth D. Nichols: Since the government would own the plants and the silver could be returned after the war, we decided we should approach the U.S. Treasury to borrow the needed metal from the silver repository. As a result, I visited Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Daniel Bell. He explained the procedure for transferring the silver and asked, "How much do you need?" I replied, "Six thousand tons." "How many troy ounces is that?" he asked. In fact, did not know how to convert tons to troy ounces, and neither did he. A little impatient, I responded, don't know how many troy ounces we need, but I know I need six thousand tons-that is a definite quantity. What difference does it make how we express the quantity?" He replied rather indignantly, "Youngman, you may think of silver in tons, but the Treasury will always think of silver in troy ounces." With our contrasting perspectives expressed, we then settled on a form of agreement that was ultimately used to transter some 14,700 tons of silver from its storage place at West Point to New Jersey, where it was melted down and cast into large ingots for shipment to Allis- Chalmers in Milwaukee for further processing.

In all this time, full of so much political turmoil and economic frustration, nothing else has loomed as large as A.I., which now seems to many Americans to occupy almost the whole horizon of possibility. This is the biggest reason that data centers have attained such totemic significance for so many Americans and why technologists have tended to see the backlash as an uncompromising war against progress. But 75 percent of Americans aren’t against progress. That’s absurd. They just resent it being imposed on them, unilaterally and unconditionally.

* Ulam once won a match with Fermi, 6-4. Fermi refused to concede defeat. He pointed out that the difference between the two scores was less than the square root of the sum of the scores, 3.17. This is a shorthand method used by statisticians to determine whether a result is significant or within the limits of measurement error. Cover of e-book for Lessons from Cats for Surviving Fascism by Stewart Reynolds Like On Tyranny, but with cats, this is the ulti- mate guide to channeling feline wisdom in the face of authoritarian nonsense. Cats, the original masters of stealth, sass, and strategic chaos, have been teaching us survival tactics for centuries they just haven't been this explicit about it. Until now. Through humor, sharp insights, and unapolo- getic defiance, LESSONS FROM CATS FOR SURVIVING FASCISM lays out eleven essen- tial cat-inspired strategies for resisting con- trol and reclaiming power. From staying nim- ble and unpredictable to demanding what you need with the confidence of a hungry tabby, each chapter is packed with lessons that are as subversive as they are practical. Whether you're facing off against a system that thrives on control or just trying to make sense of a chaotic world, these lessons will arm you with the tools and the attitude you need to fight back.
