It's an edited video — you cannot know what happened in the seconds before. That's exactly the problem. IHL doesn't care about the edit. It requires that the chance to surrender is genuinely given. The more of these videos I see, the more that moment is missing.

The moment we say "it's okay when the good guys do it" — we destroy the framework Ukraine depends on. Support Ukraine. Hold Russia accountable. And hold everyone to the same standard. Hors de Combat isn't a technicality. It's the line between war and murder.

This matters for Ukraine specifically: → Ukraine wants to be a law-abiding, Western-aligned nation → Ukraine wants Russian war crimes prosecuted → Ukraine wants IHL to protect its own soldiers None of that works if we apply law selectively.

I'm not generating sympathy for Russian soldiers. But I need to talk about "Hors de Combat." Under the Geneva Conventions (AP I), a combatant who is clearly no longer able to fight must not be attacked. Doesn't matter which side. Doesn't matter the weapon. That includes drones.
