That was different... I heard the sound of loud engines outside thinking it may have been a chinook. When I peer outside I see a large vintage bomber doing a lap of East London. Possibly a B17? Not bad photos considering I didn't have very long to grab the big camera.

Eeep... Having noted how brown and dry everything is looking outside this morning I was wondering how long it has been since it last rained over my bit of East London. Checking my smart weather station it hasn't rained at all here since 28th June... 31 days ago. Yikes.
A graph showing rainfall in mm over time. The graph shows data from 1st May 2026 to today (28th July 2026). There has not been a single mm of rainfall recorded since 28th June 2026, 31 days ago.

Ooops... #HomeAssistant sent me an alert that the temperature on the balcony had reached 40c. It turns out that I hadn't been paying attention to where I aimed the exhaust host of the air conditioner when I turned it on earlier, so it was blasting hot air right into my NetAtmo weather station.
A graph showing temperatures over time from an outdoor sensor on my balcony. The line on the graph starts as you would expect it on a warm sunny day. The graph starts at 16:00 yesterday showing a peak of 25c slowly falling over the evening and night to a low of 20c. The temperature then climbs steadily through this morning to a peak of 32c until 14:00 where it suddenly jumps to 47c... the graph ends with a sudden drop after I had moved the hose of the air conditioner.

While doing a bit of spring cleaning I stumbled on my ancient iPod Nano… this thing can’t have been used or even charged in over a decade. I press the power button not expecting anything to happen and it boots right up. Going to charge it and see if it’s even still usable in 2026.

No Eurovision Song Contest for me tonight… the endless cheating and the corruption of the competition has completely ruined it for me, I just can’t enjoy it anymore. Instead I’ll be celebrating the 32nd birthday of one of my favourite films. The adventures of Priscilla Queen of the desert.

RIP balcony pigeon It has been 2 months since I last saw him so I have to assume he is now an ex pigeon. A daily visitor to my balcony since summer 2021 when Input water out during the heatwave. He must have had some crazy genetics he would do mid-air backflips and had tan and salmon pink plumage.

I've done some maths... Not only would replacing my entire homelab with an M4 Mac Mini save me over £65 per month in electricity usage, it would be more powerful, and pay for itself in energy savings in under 9 months... I see a new purchase on the horizon.

On this day 6th March 2018... I took a couple of friends to see the filming of Q.I. This was the Series P episode "Pictures" with Joe Lycett, Alan Davies, Hannah Gadsby and Noel Fielding. It was exactly as chaotic as you would image... it was also Alan's birthday... we sang and there was cake 😄

On This Day: 30 Jan 2012 This was an absolute arsehole of a day and I still remember it quite vividly. In the early hours of of the morning one of the core routers for the Eclipse Internet (remember them?) went pop. I must have spent 12 hours in Telehouse North that day getting it swapped out.
View out of a window in the Telehouse North datacenter in east London. The vista is bleak and unwelcoming. Large looming grey buildings with rooftops covered in air conditioning and air chilling machinery.

On this day... 21st Jan 2013. Day two of heavy snowfall across London. I remember cycling to work through this weather. This may have been the inspiration for building a fat tyred snow bike a couple of years later.
A bicycle locked in a bike rack. It's a mountain bike with bright red and silver accents. With at least 4 inches of snow built up on top of the handlebars and saddle.

Oooh... We haven't had an amber warning for a while. Here's hoping we actually get some decent thunderstorms this time!
A screenshot of an amber weather warning provided by the UK Met Office. The warning reads:

Amber warning - Thunderstorm
04:00 Tomorrow - 11:00 Tomorrow

Torrential rain, with thunderstorms in places, could lead to some significant surface water flooding during Saturday morning

What should I expect?

Some communities likely to become cut off if roads flood

Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely

Spray and sudden flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

Power cuts likely to occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
