I understand that I am the only person who cares about this, in this or any other context BUT *the song isn't fucking called Teenage Waste Land*

I just hope there is a featurette entitled "What Kind Of Day Has It Been", for reasons

I'm pretty sure Gavin Newsom has been running for president since before he was born

071

And, critically, *those prominent figures insist that they are socially liberal despite their virulent transphobia and a bunch of people in the British media pretend to believe them* This dynamic is largely absent from US politics (complimentary)

I have it on good authority that they will run the government "like a business" though

Very possibly the worst band name of all time, regardless of genre, to say nothing of the quality of the music

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 12/09/2026

The thing about the prequels is that they are bad in ways that prefigure why movies are bad now ("let's explain the motivations of this evil character in an undergrad way") and good in ways absent from modern movies ("holy shit this movie looks amazing")

A loyalty oath, pure and simple, clear to anyone paying attention

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

Periodically I am struck by an inability to decide if the sheer brazenness of the cynicism outweighs the depth of the depravity And it probably doesn't really matter But holy shit

Man this framing is SO UPSETTING “Building the future” fuck OFF

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 09/09/2026

More troubled by the cavalier use of "junkie" although that is (maybe to your point) not actually surprising per se

Right but the part you are missing is that *I live* west of the Mississippi so I *personally* care about/am offended by this

011

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

I guess you left Georgia and Virginia mostly unscathed too, looking more closely. I still feel that my overall point stands.

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

Impressive that you believe the only states that do not require adjustment of any kind are TX, NY, and FL, in addition to being this cavalier with everything west of the Mississippi

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

While this is totally true on paper, I do think there is something to the idea that the person "we" picked is *uniquely* poorly suited to the particular set of circumstances, and that things would maybe be *marginally* better if it were a person who was less reprehensible to begin with

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 04/09/2026

I know this is third rail territory on this website but I genuinely believe that many people who went to work for him believed in the promise of his campaign ("I'll be the 51st vote, we can finally do the agenda you've been promised") and absolutely did not fucking sign up for whatever *this* is

Very happy that the extremely bullshit cynicism being peddled in this primary was resoundingly defeated

0240

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

This is only tangential to your broader point but it makes me *so fucking mad* every time I look at this dipshit appropriating Dr Strangelove for his avatar as if being a bog standard handmaiden of the status quo is in any way subversive

“Making a statement” is performative, whereas voting is…ostensibly the job function of a senator? What are we even doing

Romany Malco in 40 Year Old Virgin yelling "Why you always telling me to fuck a goat, man?".gif

Sometimes things aren’t performative they’re just efficient

150

I guess a lot of the people in question only want the kind of narrative fiction with wholly uncomplicated characters that confirm their priors

190

Isn’t this just like why there is (among other things) any kind of narrative fiction

180

Dolly Parton believed in a beautiful vision of America. But she didn’t just live her life like that vision was true. She did everything in her (considerable) powers and abilities to make that vision real.

For one thing it calls into question why it was even necessary to do the war part in the first place (and yes, I understand that for the modern heirs of the Confederacy and the Reich, this is the point)

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 24/08/2026

Robin Lopez was the starting center at one point! I don’t know if there’s a starker chasm of likability

A very unfortunate low point of the Dame Era in Portland was when he was getting rotation minutes out of sheer desperation (the other centers on the roster being oft-injured Jusuf Nurkic and uhhhh Meyers Leonard)

It's actually the fact of their racism that's objectively true as it turns out

000

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 23/08/2026

It's very unfortunate, somehow a leap was made from "assume good faith, most people are not trying to be assholes" to "how fucking DARE you even IMPLY that someone is operating in bad faith and/or an asshole". Those are not equivalent assertions!

One of my very favorite stories from working at a big bookstore was talking to a woman who was *incensed* that we didn't have books on "practical ghost hunting safety" and demanded that I find another store nearby that did

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 19/08/2026

The Dolly Parton Corollary

090

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Yet another example of elite impunity. “Rules” and “morality” are beneath these people, according to their worldview, and very few people (if any) are willing to challenge this worldview in word or in deed.

One of those songs that makes me feel stupid for loving, and yet A powerful argument for the majesty of the anthemic chorus

100

Tim @tjrbare.bsky.social · 12/08/2026

Can confirm - I worked at a bookstore in Portland for many years, many friends still work there, and it is in fact *shocking* how many *well-meaning liberal book lovers* have no fucking idea

Have to think the answer remains Dolly Parton (who would be even richer if she decided to stop building libraries in Southern states that won't fund them with public money or whatever)
