oh would it? what marx, exactly, would help me see that doing arithmetic pre-1900s is not labor?

just because something can be done by a machine doesn't make the activity any less labor.

Plenty of people sweat blood over arithmetic. Katherine Johnson kept people alive in space by doing complex manual calculations. If your pedantic about arithmetic see: the "human computers" of Gaspard de Prony, and literally every accountant in history before the mid-20th century. Labor is labor.

How’s the Eastern APA going? I almost tore my hair out when a commentator on a paper which completely misunderstood Marx said “I agree with Kant rather than Marx” that the liberal state is the superior ethical form of society.

Just arrived in Baltimore for the APA Eastern. Disappointed to hear of the last minute cancellation of the SPEP panel this year.

A stack of fifteen books, mostly on marxism, fascism, with a few books of poetry and fiction.

This is your reminder that forced labor (e.g. soviet POWs and abducted Eastern European civilians, mostly polish) made up ~25% of the agricultural work force in the Third Reich. ~2.7 of 10-11 million. This isn’t even touching on the SS’s separate leasing of slaves to make the camps profitable.

The WSJ one was bonkers. The finance person quoted clearly couldn’t understand socialism if they tried.
A painting in the style of Socialist Realism shows a passionate Russian soldier from the 1917 Revolution, dressed in a green military uniform with a red star on his cap, shouting with his arm outstretched. A speech bubble reads, “Let’s try a 2% tax on net worth over $100 million.” Behind him, a crowd of similarly dressed revolutionaries marches forward holding red flags, with smoke and classical architecture in the background. The image humorously contrasts the mildness of the tax proposal with the revolutionary setting.
