#NewPublication Kākā exhibit partial nocturnality, a behaviour previously unknown in parrots. While mostly diurnal, kākā were observed calling, eating, flying and grooming at night. Wellingtonians know this well but I'm glad to share it with the world @wild-minds.bsky.social @fieldornith.bsky.social

Fantastic to see research led by @tirthvaishnav.bsky.social published! Countless hours watching kākā eating beautifully distilled into fascinating seasonal patterns. For birds in our city it turns out native invertebrates and non native pine cones are important year round food resources!🧪🦜

In modified habitats parrots often include exotic plants in their diet, showcasing their behavioral flexibility. Kākā fed on pine seeds year-round while switching between native foods. Thus pines are an important local resource with possible conservation implications for kākā @wild-minds.bsky.social

Glad to be featured in @nzgeo.bsky.social, highlighting the importance of planting native species such as tree fuchsia, a major food resource for native birds. Based on a recent publication of bird-plant interactions in @zealandia.bsky.social @vicuniwgtn.bsky.social www.nzgeo.com/stories/want...

Our grads will stop traffic this week with glam fits, billowing cloaks, and bright smiles, on their way to celebrate their achievements at the MFC and Te Herenga Waka marae. The parade will run from the Old Government Buildings to Queens Wharf on Thursday 11 December.

Super proud of Dr Tirth Vaishnav who is graduating this week! He started his thesis remotely and during a global pandemic, and after overcoming a host of challenges (not just limited to kākā being tricksy) he smashed it out of the park. Congratulations Tirth!
