Aiden was, as expected, still weak, so Elsie was driving to their place. She missed driving. Her life was filled with portals, hopping from town to town, country to country, always on the go. So being able to get into her old truck and drive the dirt roads of Chestnut Ridge felt special. Soothing.

“You need to rest.” Jake clearly saw the day catching up to his husband, and helped him stand to leave. Once Aiden was in the truck, Jake turned to thank Elsie. “You know I’d do anything for you. I’ve cleared my schedule for the next few days, so let me know when he feels up to the next steps.”

Aiden let out a breath. “Good thing it’s destroyed. I don’t want to live in a world with it around.” Elsie nodded solemnly. Yep. Don’t freak the mundanes. No need for them to know what she really did with the curse, it would only worry them needlessly.

She couldn’t wait to investigate the curse further! Who made it? Why make it? How did it work? She wanted to know everything! Wyatt was watching her when she returned to the circle. Had he seen? Whatever. “Is it over?” Jake asked, looking at her with worry still in his eyes, “Is he free and okay?”

She frowned when her magic found the curse within the man. It wasn’t your typical run-of-the-mill variety. Usually, a curse was something placed upon an individual, and it stayed with that person, living and dying with them at surface level.

With Aiden feeling relaxed, he was comfortable in her cellar & happily chatting about baby plans as she prepared for the curse-breaking. They’d mentioned Step 2 on the phone yesterday, but Elsie was still unsettled by it. She kept glancing at Wyatt & doing her best to keep her promise to Charlene.

Jake spoke, interrupting the casters' conversation. “Can we go back to Aiden’s curse? This may be an everyday thing to you, Els, but it isn’t for us.” His voice was full of controlled anger. He was worried for his husband, and she & Wyatt were chatting like it was a fracking Sunday social.

“You-” She continued, unaware of the brief turmoil, “-however, Wyatt Calderhart, nee-Calderon from Willow Creek, currently residing in Sulani, outcast from caster society because of unusually uncontrolled magics, who conceived and birthed five children…” A pause, “I have many questions for.”

Then the door opened, and there she was. Looked like nothing special to him. Orange hair was ugly as shit. “Boys! You always bring me the nicest gifts!” Gifts? Their eyes met, and the smirk on her face made him realize that he was the gift. He smirked back, “This gift is not for you.”

The next few minutes were the most unimpressive moments of Wyatt’s life. The phoenix’s home was a box. Was this the right place? He said nothing as they exited, maybe there was a portal inside? “Here we are!” Aiden, eager to get out from between them, nearly bounced out of the truck.
