In the cafeteria Ed is black leather and ripped jeans, easy grins and grace, humming at a frequency Stede’s whole body is dialed to.

“Notice he doesn’t stare at that Teach kid anymore?” Evelyn asks.

“No,” Mary says, and then, “Wait, really?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Stede says, even as his cheeks pink up. “Who?”

The girls shriek with laughter, which is fine.

It’s fine, because Ed will throw pebbles at Stede’s window tonight, and Stede will sneak out to meet him, and Ed’s lips will be a soft current, and that is a secret worth keeping.

Ed raised an eyebrow. “Did I give you this much grief when I was the candy witch?”

“No, you were the very model of patience.”

“Okay, rude,” Ed sulked.

“We could skip to the happy ending?” Stede suggested, pulling back the covers and smiling wolfishly.

And they did.
