I'm not saying I wept tears of joy over typed dictionaries there was something in my eye.

An #intro I guess? Hey y'all, I'm Morgan. ex-Riot, ex-Nexon, etc. making a foray into indie solo dev. Coding is my main thing. Worked in Unreal and Unity but loving Godot. I like making unhinged terminally online genre-mashup games. #indiedev #gamedev #indiegames

Context: I'm used to developing in studio where it would be madness not to get some solid gameplay prototypes first. But I'm realizing that a visual vertical slice first might make more sense as a solo. It will be easier to talk about the game once I can show it.

Ok actually a question for indie world. For brand new projects, what do you start on? What should I start with?

If I'm being honest. My real answer is that I muddle around, do google searches, spend a few days doing exciting but unhelpful things, and then finally I remember all the stuff above and get back to actual work.

Seriously the most important productivity tool in my arsenal.

Basically I'm just a very distractable person who, left to her own devices, tends to follow whatever is shiny and cool, NOT the most critical thing to make a fun game. Rigor is for my own good, and artificial deadlines to me are like Earth's sun to Super Man.

If its a truly solo project I might just use www.usemotion.com for tracking. Its better at time management than I am, hands down. If its more complicated or I have a team I might go ahead and use linear.app .

I like a real physical white board over a digital tool. I like to spend a while live brainstorming the key experiences, getting them all listed out. Then I snap a photo, move them over into some kind of tracking system, stack rank 'em and start jamming.

Whats your approach to kicking off a new game project? For more complicated games I like to begin with a collection of small gameplay spikes around core pillars of the gameplay. The first one is always movement, because if movement isn't delightful, nobody will check out the rest.

When you know you should start with gameplay prototypes but the urge to do lookdev and render tests is strong. ADHD is a double edged sword.

I would love to be added! Used to be in the industry but I'm just getting started as a solo indie.

I'm so jealous of your skills. The lighting on the architectural study is particularly mind-blowing.
