rewatched the sound of music yesterday and have thoughts

my review of the sound of music:

this movie is astonishingly more conservative than i remember. i had always thought it weird to refer to pre-anschluss austria as "the last golden days of the 30s" given hitler was about to invade czechoslovakia, the depression had hit, and the japanese had been occupying manchukuo for about five years. what i wasn't aware of was austria's well established fascist- and later nazi-aligned government at the time the movie takes place, curiously not discussed outside of rolf saying "well, some people think we (austrians) ought to be german." "some people" -

is an understatement given how many ("aryan") austrians agreed to the anschluss in a referendum. much like everything else about austria's role in nazism, it is brushed aside for an emphasis on who resisted—ignoring the far more numerous people who collaborated.

and i haven't even touched the implicit misogyny and maternalist arguments around maria being a "good influence" on captain von trapp and persuading him to give a fuck about the children. (certainly not true to life either-about maria or captain von trapp.) in fact, what is lost in this adaptation of their lives is that maria was a 22 year old novice and was compelled by the nuns ("it is god's will you marry the captain") to marry a man twice her age. while i'm

sure it wouldn't make for such a feel-good movie, there is an amount of tragedy in that scenario worth discussing.

all of this made the movie that much harder to watch. i did get some good things out of it, like a laugh at charmian carr's obvious crush on christopher plummer, the dinner scene the first night maria stays with the von trapps, and songs like "climb ev'ry mountain" and "something good." but nonetheless, my view of this movie is much less rose-colored than before. it's a shame, since this movie is one of my fondest childhood memories.

capitalism does not self-regulate; it is not in the interests of hyper capitalists like thiel to do so because it could maybe hypothetically reduce their chances at getting more money from their investment. capitalism has enabled digital feudalism

As fun as it is to joke about these people [the Make America Hot Again movement], it exposes a real gap on the Left. Where are we meant to take up any cultural space? The Right's fashion is almost a throwback to the 50s and 80s with its power suits, strict gender roles, and garish makeup. DHS is using 1940s and 1950s-era graphics to recruit for ICE.

The Left in turn has been pigeonholed into gender-neutral fashion (or frumpiness), blue hair, and facial piercings. In short, reactionary nostalgia colors every bit of right wing culture while the left wing is mocked as ultramodern.

I think we should lean into that. The US is not a country of solely white Christians with five kids,

and people who look like
Zohran Mamdani represent
Democrats better than
Karoline Leavitt. The Right's attachment to the 1940s through 1960s (through a white lens) is their weakness, because we know it's all smoke and mirrors. A Republican campaign that continues this old-fashioned
