Experimented with Grok for pose reference this time — asked for action poses in my character's style, then drew everything by hand at my actual pixel resolution. The reference is illustration, not pixel art. The pixel work is mine. Different tools for different stages of the process. #pixelart

[The Morality Meter Paradox: When Good vs. Evil Becomes Optimization] Many RPGs feature a "Karma Bar", yet these systems often fail to evoke genuine moral angst. Why do morality systems so easily devolve into mechanical min-maxing?

AI-reference workflow: Stewart's soccer moveset. Kick, tackle, slide tackle, chip. Confirming what I said last round — reference was most useful for the specialist poses. A slide tackle has three specific frames of body language I'd never have found on my own. Pixels by hand. #pixelart #gamedev

Spent hours trying to write four scenes that felt connected. They kept feeling like four scenes. The shift, when it came, was small: every scene is the same theme in a different social register. Peer, parent, aggressor, institution. Once I saw the structural repetition, the writing wrote itself.

Game designer Soren Johnson famously noted: "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game". When the safest path to victory is repetitive grinding or passive turtle-tactics, players naturally gravitate toward it—even if it ruins their own enjoyment.

Making a puzzle game is a lot like translating poetry. Every line has a literal meaning (what the mechanic does) and a felt meaning (what it evokes). Get the first right and you have a working puzzle. Get the second right and you have a memorable one.

The difficulty of narrative puzzle games in one sentence: A puzzle wants the player to feel clever. A story wants the player to feel moved. Every design decision is a negotiation between those two verbs, and neither side is willing to lose. #gamedev #gamedesign

[Push-Forward Combat: DOOM's 4 Ps of Action Design] In conventional shooters, taking damage encourages hiding behind cover to regenerate. DOOM subverts this with "Push-Forward Combat", driving players to sprint headfirst into danger.

Most puzzles reward decisive input. Mine tries to reward the opposite — the pause before you commit to a permutation, the moment you're not sure which order feels right. The ghost's trail-shadow lingers longest on the input you almost changed. Hesitation as gameplay texture. #gamedev #gamedesign

Solo devs underestimate how much a game's first 90 seconds is just UI clarity. Great mechanics buried behind a confusing menu get refunded anyway. Which indie fixed this best for you? #indiedev #gamedev

In Super Mario 3D World, players encounter fresh mechanics every few minutes without ever needing tedious text tutorials. Co-director Koichi Hayashida achieved this through a four-step level design philosophy rooted in the classical narrative structure Kishōtenketsu.

The ambition I don't usually say out loud: I want my puzzle mechanic to borrow the shape of therapeutic process. Not to be therapy. Not to replace it. To feel like the shape of what therapy actually does. #gamedev #gamedesign

Question for two years: Can a puzzle mechanic enact a theme instead of just illustrating one? My attempt: a game where rearranging directional inputs reconstructs a memory. The permutation isn't the metaphor. It's the thing. You aren't solving a puzzle about memory. You're remembering. #gamedev

Solo-dev note: been using an LLM as a story interlocutor for The Synaptic Voyage, my puzzle game about memory. Useful less as generator, more as the friend who asks "why is this scene doing what it's doing?" Curious what other solo devs have tried — the failure modes are as interesting as the wins.

For roguelikes, the time between dying and starting the next run is a bigger retention lever than balance. Under ten seconds and I'll go again. A stats screen, a loading bar and two menus and I'm alt-tabbing. Trim the death screen before you retune the enemies. #roguelike #indiedev
