Defend Scientific Research, Defend Our Universities, and Defend Our Communities! AAUP NC Call to Action on Proposed OMB Rules and on UNC Institutional Neutrality Policy drive.google.com/file/d/1VtEm... Text follows 1/
Since taking office, the Trump Administration has instituted multiple changes that threaten funding for science in the US. Congress has pushed back, passing budgets that continue to provide strong support for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and other science agencies. In response, the Administration has sought to restrict and control science funding by other means. On May 29, Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, issued a set of proposed changes that would dramatically alter federal funding across the board, including funding for science. These sweeping changes would, among other things, reduce the role of peer review by making all grant decisions occur at the discretion of a political appointee, allow grant termination without cause, mandate that funding fit the “Administration's priorities” rather than being governed by scientific merit, seriously restrict foreign collaborations, and have other effects that will seriously damage the science enterprise in America. Similar rules will apply to all federal funding, from that for social science, the arts, and humanities to funding for programs that meet basic human needs. Science magazine has a good summary of some of the most impactful changes.

Of all the actions taken by the Administration with respect to federal funding, this is the most far-reaching and impactful. Scientific societies, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, are mobilizing their members to respond. There is a straightforward mechanism for the public to comment. Former NIH program officer Elizabeth Ginexi has written an exceptionally helpful guide on how to do so, with detailed suggestions. She emphasizes the value of individual comments that address specific provisions rather than form letters, and gives details you will need to write and submit an effective comment. She offers examples for people at all career stages and for concerned members of the public…comments have already been received. To comment, visit this link, and then please click here to let us know.

These changes, if implemented, would have dramatic effects on universities across our state. Federal funding, vetted by experts in the respective areas, underlies much of the research taking place across NC. In addition to individual comments, we need our universities to speak out publicly. However, the Institutional Neutrality Policy put in place by the Board of Governors prohibits UNC schools from speaking out publicly on issues like this that are existential threats to the university and its mission. Further, university leaders’ public silence demoralizes the researchers across the system who have committed their lives to scientific inquiry, and the communities whose lives depend on the fruits of up-to-date, peer-reviewed scientific research. Therefore, in addition to opposing the proposed OMB rules change, we call on the UNC Board of Governors, whose responsibility is to defend the UNC System and ensure that it can fulfill its mission, to eliminate this pernicious aspect of the current policy.

AAUP NC is working with scientists and other colleagues to defend higher education as a public good, and to prevent the politicization of science that these proposed OMB rules changes portend. We urge you to join us in this effort, and to spread the word among your colleagues and students.

Bari Weiss's censoring 60 Minutes in the name of "building trust" is of a coin with Peter Hans's imposing a pro-doxxing syllabus policy in the name of "rebuilding public trust." They are both the gaslighting actions of political operatives sent to destroy the institutions they lead.

MEMORANDUM OPINION
One morning, Kafka's Josef K. awakens to encounter two strange men outside his room.
As he gets his bearings, he realizes that he is under arrest. When he asks the strangers why, he
receives no answer. "We weren't sent to tell you that," one says. "Proceedings are under way
and you'll learn everything in due course." Franz Kafka, The Trial 5 (Breon Mitchell trans.,
Schocken Books Inc. 1998). Bewildered by these men and distressed by their message, K. tries
to comfort himself that he lives in "a state governed by law," one where "all statutes [are] in
force." Id. at 6. He therefore demands again, "How can I be under arrest? And in this manner?"
"Now there you go again," the guard replies. "We don't answer such questions." Undeterred, K.
offers his "papers" and demands their arrest warrant. "Good heavens!" the man scolds. "There's
been no mistake." "[O]ur department," he assures K., is only "attracted by guilt"; it "doesn't
seek [it] out…. That's the Law." Id. at 8-9. "I don't know that law," K. responds. "You'll feel
it eventually," the guard says. Id. at 9.

🚨WOW. It turns out that a "Tren de Aragua gathering" the Trump admin said it broke up in March ... was just a BIRTHDAY PARTY. None of the people arrested at the party seem to have any criminal record — and none have been charged criminally in the months since it happened. Read the story below.
HAYS COUNTY — In late March, a group of Venezuelan relatives and friends, celebrating a pair of birthdays, rented a six-bedroom house in the southern tip of Austin with a pool and stunning views from every window of Texas’ Hill Country.

They decorated a table for a cake and blew up balloons. As the night faded, the kids went to bed and the adults kept hanging out.

Suddenly, at about 5 a.m. the next morning, the group heard explosions from flashbangs, followed by shouts from law enforcement yelling commands to get out of the house, according to interviews with two attendees.

“We all started shouting that there were babies — ‘Babies, there’s babies,’” recounted a 30-year-old Venezuelan man, who said he was at the house to celebrate the birthdays of his son, who turned 5, and his best friend, who turned 28.

Hours ago, @politico.com revealed that DOGE is working with DHS on automating mass deportation efforts — likely explaining why many US citizens, green card holders, and even a Canadian (in Canada) got threatening emails last night terminating “your parole” and telling them to leave the US in 7 days.

Notice of Termination of Parole
it is time for you to leave the United States.
You are currently here because the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) paroled you into the United States for a limited period. Pursuant to 8 U.S.C. § 1182(d)(5)(A) and 8 C.F.R. § 212.5(e), DHS is now exercising its discretion to terminate your parole. Unless it expires sooner, your parole will terminate 7 days from the date of this notice.
If you do not depart the United States immediately you will be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States - unless you have otherwise obtained a lawful basis to remain here. Any benefits you receive in the United States connected with your parole - such as work authorization — will also terminate. You will be subject to potential criminal prosecution, civil fines, and penalties, and any other lawful options available to the federal government.
DHS encourages you to leave immediately on your own.
You can use the CBP Home mobile app on your phone to make arrangements for your departure. If you are departing the United States via land, you should report your departure once outside the United States via that same app. If you are having trouble reporting your departure via land, visit https://194.cbp.dhs.gov/home for more information about voluntarily reporting your departure.
Again, DHS is terminating your parole. Do not attempt to remain in the United States - the federal government will find you. Please depart the United States immediately.
