Valkyries have been great lately, albeit largely against cellar-dwellers. Hoping they can make some noise.

Which ones would say are “works of genius”? Of the few I’ve read, The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death was my clear favorite, although all were enjoyable.

One might or might not like The White Hotel, but “talent” is exactly what it does not lack.

His second example is a hot mess, but I quite liked the first. February might not be "like a house when no one is home" to you or me, but it might be turn out to be a character's opinion. Can't tell just by reading page one.

Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 26/08/2026
Interesting, but I have quibbles. "fiction whose first (and sometimes only) mission is to impress me." Page one is exactly where that's most likely to happen, and most forgivable. "the familiar is rendered totally new and strange" He's being sarcastic, but I think that's a worthy goal.

The DX7 made low-quality forgery easy, but also made a new kind of high-quality distinctive work possible. Not sure any AI can manage that second part.

Any number of SF/F books are basically adventures in weird places with weird stuff that one can imagine using the props of the other genre (or even of historical fiction) with similar results. But each genre has a core of works for which that's not true, even if the SF "science" is impossible.
010
Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 10/08/2026
My issue with that is that, for genre purposes, I don't really agree with that definition of fantasy. In theory, "fantasy" can include anything from Gilgamesh to Gravity's Rainbow (and, yes, almost all SF), but fantasy-the-genre is a lot more tightly constrained.

Certainly there are writers like Jack Vance where it hardly matters.

I think Engine Summer would lose at least some of its force if the speculative elements were cast as, say, a return of enchantment to the world rather than as consequences of our (then-)current technological development.

Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 09/08/2026
I would go so far as to say Engine Summer is the best SF novel by anybody.

I have not read the original, but IIRC the part where Coth catches the princess’ eye, the reason therefor, and the ensuing events are from an Aztec text. Tomorrow I’ll see if I can track down the reference.

[Lin] Carter … call[ed] him “the only serious American novelist of genius to devote his full career to writing urbane, witty, subtle, and magnificently entertaining fantasy fiction” Did Carter forget that John Collier wrote novels as well as short stories? Or did he forget him completely?

Thanks for giving a book I love perceptive treatment despite your personal distaste! A couple of things: --It's "Figures of Earth," not "Figures of the Earth" (the distinction is important, as you will see when you get to it) --The "Mesoamerican-coded" story is a retelling of an Aztec legend.

Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 20/07/2026
Well, neither do I! Craig Shaw Gardner, Robert Asprin, and Esther Friesner give me hives, and in the BAF, I feel much the same about Kai Lung and Shagpat as you do about TSS. But Cabell seems completely different to me—more akin to Firbank, Beerbohm or Dunsany than to later genre fantasy.

Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 20/07/2026
“The Way of Ecben” (in The Young Magicians) is at the opposite pole of his work, and (to this Cabell fan) among his best. If you don’t like that either, you can probably write him off.
011
Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 20/07/2026
It’s true that Jurgen is his best, but I can’t imagine liking it if you dislike TSS that much. I believe that BAF excluded it because it was already in print (from Dover).
110
Tim Walters @timwaltersphoto.com · 20/07/2026
You are in for a world of hurt, I’m afraid. I guess it’s remotely possible you might like his more serious work. But finding TSS to be tedious is as incomprehensible to me as thinking ice cream tastes nasty, so my guess isn’t worth much.
