Great to see/hear (on YouTube or audio only) @markoconnell.bsky.social on this excellent podcast. He elaborates on his richly informative and fabulous new James Bond 007 related book:

In addition to her great performances, Eva Marie Saint's name was lovingly referenced in Gremlins 2, as New York's "The Cathedral of St. Eva Marie". The location, of course, doesn't exist, and was a composite of matte paintings and LA location/studio backlot work.

RIP composer George Fenton. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... He made so much great music across his career, but this might be my personal favourite of his tunes:

40 years ago today, Top Gun was released in UK cinemas! For those who didn't catch my deep-dive into the striking visual look that Tony Scott gave the film, and the state of the art tech used to realise it, both above and below the clouds:

Amusingly, I think this image is the closest from the real world to resemble the trend of sloppy, fake behind the scenes miniatures shoots shared across social media. Grown adults enjoying real-time make-believe with a toy sized world. It looks like it would be so much fun to be there.

In relation to my next video, I have been listening a lot to Chaka Khan's I Feel For You album, from 1984. It is one of the best and probably one of the most influential albums of the 1980s. New York electro soul, hip-hop & freestyle sounds put into pop. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIei...

Very sad to read this. I wanted to speak to John Grover for my new video. He was an incredibly skilled editor & ludicrously underused. Labyrinth & Lifeforce both benefit so much from the pacy rhythms of a 007 editor, rather than the ponderous style associated with the fantasy genre of that time.

Three Days of The Condor (1975) GoldenEye (1995) The scene of innocent office workers being mowed down in the former feels to me like a strong inspiration for the scene in the latter. Both have a surviving main character on break & lots of effective close ups of guns firing.

It's cool how it looks like the camera is first handheld/on steadicam, with the operator straddling, walking across the back of the plane & zip-panning, even though it's moving hundreds of miles an hour. When the other jet spins in, the operator seems to then jump off and fly, like Superman!

I get the impression they were trying to channel the energetic and dynamic feeling of the classic Thundercats opening. These intros are works of art, even if largely, totally unrepresentative of the episode animation. Imagine if entire episodes looked and moved like this? bsky.app/profile/ultr...

I still love the moody atmosphere of this show, or at least this intro. Everything happens at dusk, plus moody synthesisers and westerns just work so well together. I love the music especially at 00:16-27:00 and the sound effects of the aircraft at 00:22 are burned into my mind.

It took me a while to get into the Ghostbuster films, having been so attached to the show. The tone of the movies was so different, & why was so much time spent with this "new" character, Dana? I love this Princely, Minneapolis flavoured original song from the show: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwS5...

The Real Ghostbusters turns 40 today! I watched this show when it first aired in the UK without knowing there was a Ghostbusters movie. When the film eventually played on UK TV in 1988, I assumed it was a spin off of the animated series! Great memories of this beautiful artwork on merchandise.

The score to Mortal Kombat Annihilation was ahead of its time. Nowadays it sounds like a retro techno/orchestral hybrid from something like the recent Masters of the Universe. I also think the MK films got the ball rolling for action music heard in The Matrix movies. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpGS...

I believe the opening title sequence of Out of Africa (1985) was the first non-genre/special effects movie that Industrial Light and Magic worked on. A miniature train was filmed against a bluescreen and composited over background plates of Kenya (that look like stills).

Holiday on the Buses (1973) Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987) Both of these scenes were filmed at Elstree Studios, in the exact same area outside of (the now demolished) Stage 5, which was dressed to look like both a suburban London bus station and the bottom of a Metropolis Skyscraper.
