My immediate reaction:
A screenshot from the "Gotcha" episode of the British game show Countdown. The letters board reads "OMETHINGS". An actress, posing as a contestant, ponders whether she can make a word from these letters. ;)

2026 Day 1 Not sure yet quite how I'm going to manage this in the longer term. To say it was a LOT easier back when I lived next to the park is a major understatement! Tried to stay light, but that's easier said than done when you're starting from scratch and relearning.

Did @backblaze.bsky.social seriously just multiply the radius by 2 in an email that's LITERALLY ABOUT PI?
An announcement email from Backblaze about a partnership to store a recent record-breaking calculation of 314 trillion digits of the mathematical constant pi. In a section pointing out that that would stretch for 414 million miles on ticker tape in a 6-point font, I've highlighted a sentence that reads: "For scale, the earth to the sun is about 93 million miles or so, and longer than the earth’s orbit around the sun (around 186 million miles)."

Sheet music of the initial melody of "Bugler's Dream" by Leo Arnaud, an iconic theme used for Olympic television coverage in the US, parenthetically subtitled "I know I'm not the only one that thinks this". Lyrics attributed to Calixa Lavallée are provided beneath the melody, beginning with "O Canada" on the opening notes of each phrase which mirror the Canadian national anthem of the same name, followed swiftly for the rest of each phrase by "da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da".

Gotta say I'm not exactly loving this timeline.
A ChatGPT prompt reading “‘Thanks for your attention to this matter’ has become a politically charged phrase due to its overuse by a certain prominent politician. What are some good alternatives?”

ChatGPT responds: “Certainly! If ‘Thanks for your attention to this matter’ feels politically loaded or overused, here are some professional, neutral, and effective alternatives you can use depending on your tone and context:”

The rest of the response is then broken into several sections. The first, “Professional & Polite”, suggests: Thank you for your time and consideration”, “I appreciate your prompt attention”, “Thank you for addressing this”, “I appreciate your help with this issue”, “Thanks for looking into this”, “I’m grateful for your support on this”, and “Thank you for following up.”

A second section, “More Formal”, offers “Your attention to this is greatly appreciated”, “Thank you for your diligence in this matter”, “I value your assistance with this,” and “Your cooperation is appreciated.”

A third section, titled “Direct and Neutral”, begins with “Thanks in advance for your help,” before the image is cropped.

In some cloud-based systems like Google Drive, it already is! (Of course, they "save automatically", so this is more of a status indicator that everything is properly synced rather than something that you'd proactively click.)

The article could just end there, really. (It didn't.)
June 29 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump said a group of "very wealthy people" wants to buy the Chinese-owned TikTok social media app that is facing a ban in the United States.

During an interview Friday with Maria Bartiromo that appeared Sunday on Fox News, Trump said, "We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way," declining to name the potential buyers.

"I'll tell you in about two weeks," he added.

Getting ready for @chrislhayes.bsky.social in #Pittsburgh. Being aware of how our innate capacity for compelled attention is used against us and knowing how to tack through those winds so we can still end up where we want to go is as important now as it's ever been.

The homepage of USAID, replaced in its entirety with a message that reads as follows:

"On Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:59 pm (EST) all USAID direct hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave globally, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and specially designated programs. Essential personnel expected to continue working will be informed by Agency leadership by Thursday, February 6, at 3:00pm (EST).

"For USAID personnel currently posted outside the United States, the Agency, in coordination with missions and the Department of State, is currently preparing a plan, in accordance with all applicable requirements and laws, under which the Agency would arrange and pay for return travel to the United States within 30 days and provide for the termination of PSC and ISC contracts that are not determined to be essential. The Agency will consider case-by-case exceptions and return travel extensions based on personal or family hardship, mobility or safety concerns, or other reasons. For example, the Agency will consider exceptions based on the timing of dependents’ school term, personal or familial medical needs, pregnancy, and other reasons. Further guidance on how to request an exception will be forthcoming.

"Thank you for your service."

I've already gotten pretty weaned off Threads over the last, oh, ten days or so. Only took a couple days of intentional non-engagement to stop 95% of the notifications, which helps a lot. But I know other Meta properties will try to drag me back in. So it's time to revisit and dial up this setting.
A setting in Threads called "Break reminder". The description reads "Schedule a reminder to take a break when you spend this amount of time at once on Threads." Options are every 10 minutes, every 20 minutes, every 30 minutes, and never, with every 10 minutes selected.
