this year alone: UIC paid $11.6M to Volt AI for surveillance data analysis, $4.4M to Allied Universal Security ON TOP of UIC PD budget, over $100K on flock cameras while enforcing hiring freezes+stonewalling on faculty contracts everywhere the same grift: $ for AI + cops, NO$ for education

My family regularly watches the #MillaJovovich Resident Evil franchise and I love it. But the newest RE movie directed by #ZachCregger and lead on screen by #AustinAbrams is a delightful reset and revision. It’s funny and charming and doesn’t take itself seriously. It’s also gross. B+

But I’m not 100% disagreeing. But mainly disagreeing with you w sense that I might be misunderstanding or characterizing him.

I don’t know: he writes, “But the failures of the **political system** prevent us from using all this basic knowledge and more. The political system holds us back, not technological know-how. We are operating well short of our knowledge/technology frontier in terms of possible prosperity.”

If that’s the insight, then I’m 🤔to😤 about what we are supposed to with that?

I’m right, you’re wrong kind of thing. Maybe. But I’m trying to imagine what kinds of thinking would center two areas of disparate power-both symbolic and real (grant me those distinctions)-in a way that allows those two spheres to presumably ignore each other. That’s what he’s suggesting, yes?
100 1
Timothy Oleksiak @timothyoleksiak.bsky.social · 22h
I get he’s trying to point to how unlinked these two regions are. In one of his comments he link to one of his threads that suggests the solutions are in tech we just lack political will. And so, there is a sense of (not entirely but walking right up to it!) of demagogic rhetoric happening:

I’ll try. And I love you for playing this out. I was very much thinking that BA and DC were representations of pretty significant bubbles in real sense of how we use the term and folks have an imagination usually on ready when either of those things pop up.
110 1
Timothy Oleksiak @timothyoleksiak.bsky.social · 22h
This is fair. Not extending beyond that insight is reasonable. But no. It’s not a case of me wanting him to write something different. I’m trying to think about why it doesn’t excite me, maybe

Maybe I’m wrong about the BA as generally a location of rich folks?
100 1
Timothy Oleksiak @timothyoleksiak.bsky.social · 23h
Well, my sense is that he’s talking about separate bubbles: DC and BA. And how those spaces operate in different worlds. This reads of “I’m rich enough to ignore the harms either bubble produce that are felt and known across the country and in various sectors. Trump is not just a DC problem.

Aka - being rich shields you from so much of the harms the admin is doing and to draw comparisons between two rich locales is strange. Am I missing something here?
210 2
Timothy Oleksiak @timothyoleksiak.bsky.social · 23h
Maybe. I think about the perceived and actual harms of this administration often. And in some ways, I wonder how much of his “damage” is really to a kind of political culture. But then… like… gestures broadly at the entire United States and part of me thinks “fuck SV or Bay Area, too”

Tomorrow, 17 October, France could see a major convergence of protests: high-school and university students, Yellow Vests, trade unions, farmers and transport workers mobilising against the cost of living, austerity and deteriorating public services. It's also a highly symbolic date 🧶

Sometimes my red heeler mix pupper, Ibsen Jessica Lange, looks at me like Mason Verger from Hannibal (2001). I love him (the dog) and the movie so I’m okay with it even though it’s weird.

I wish I still lived in MI so I can vote for this man. There is a generation of political leaders who are telling us to just be better than what we have been. In the process, they school the foolish people. It’s not agism to say I love the vitality and confidence of this generation of politicians.

I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
Six small line charts showing the percent of U.S. high school students choosing each sexual identity response option by grade (9th to 12th), 2015 to 2025, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterosexual falls from about 85 to 90 percent before 2021 to about 73 percent in 2021 and 2023, then rises to about 78 to 80 percent in 2025. Gay or lesbian stays between about 2 and 5 percent throughout. Bisexual rises to about 12 percent in 2021 in every grade, then among 9th graders falls to about 7 percent in 2025, its 2019 level, while other grades stay near 10 percent. “Some other way,” added in 2021, falls from about 4 percent to about 2.5 percent. “Not sure” stays near 3 to 5 percent. A dotted line marks 2021, when CDC changed the response options.

Ibsen Jessica Lange is not interested in the foolishness of the White House Press Secretary.
Ibsen, a red heeler mix, sits in a parking lot looking off frame. He wears a sage harness that has his name on the strap in white block letters. He’s the best good dog

Let’s not insult one woman by insulting another for comparison. Leavitt was no genius, even by comparison to Zacharia. It is possible to report on these women and even compare them without insult.

The new Carrie show adapted by @mikeflanaganfilm.com is pretty fantastic if you’re a fan of the book and the movies. Incredible performances and really fantastic update to the story. I’ve been surprised. Everyone feels human without it being Hallmark or as a means to absolve cruelty.
