Most obnoxious Brummie of the day goes to this lad, who responded to my polite request to take their feet off the seats with a stream of invective. Evidently they can do what they like. I did speak to the guard, but they are busy getting the train to run on time. 1/2

All schools had extensive cycle parking, usually of this density running round all sides of the school. In Lubeck, children cycled independently for most of their journeys. 2/2

Here's Lesson 3b from the cycling city of Lübeck: Ensure public transport is cycling-friendly. Each train carriage had four spaces for cycles; each space accommodating two or three bikes. When we travelled, they were almost all full.

This is brilliant news. This local residential street 20mph-limit zone is now in operation. We're well on the way to our whole neighbourhood having safe driving speed limits.

Lübeck has green wave traffic light systems for longer routes, that allow a cyclist to always arrive at the junction with a green light. They even have an app that enables cyclists to ride at a constant riding speed that means we always hit a green light. The forth lesson from Lübeck tomorrow. 6/

Where there are separated cycleways, junctions have separate traffic signals for motor vehicles and cyclists, often giving cyclists advanced green lights. 5/

Set cycling contraflow exceptions on one-way streets. Motor vehicles are limited in the old city, with one-way streets stopping through motor traffic. But cyclists are almost always excepted, with contraflow cycling allowed on the one-way streets. 3/

Build Dutch roundabouts; cycleways that continue round the roundabout and give priority to cyclists over drivers turning. These aren't as good as the best Dutch roundabouts, with poor sight lines for cyclists, but drivers all give way as they should. 2/

Lesson 3 for the UK from Lübeck is: Build cycling-friendly infrastructure within a network of cycleways. Where there is no separated cycling infrastructure, but where cycling and e-scooter riding is commonplace, road speed limits are set at 20kph. That’s 12.4mph; a moderate cycling speed. 1/

In the heart of the old city, Fahrradstraßeare often carriageways which prioritise cycling, sometimes by only allowing resident motor vehicles to enter in one direction, while allowing bi-directional cycling. This is often reinforced by modal filters. 4/10

A Fahrradstraße gives priority to cycling. These ones are cycleways that don’t run parallel with a carriageway and have modal filters to ensure it doesn’t get used by motor vehicles. 3/10

Here's Lesson 2 from the cycling city of Lübeck: Build cycling specific infrastructure within the network of cycleways. The primary cycle routes in the old city are built upon a mixture of separated cycleways, Fahrradstraße (bicycle streets) and the new RadroutePlus.

Lübecker Altstadt, the 800-year-old central core of the city of Lübeck in Northern Germany could be a model for active travel in the UK. Here's lesson one: Build a network of cycleways, linking places people want to go. These primary routes make cycling locally easy and safe. 1/4
