Your favorite Anthropic so-called "whistleblower" said that the rationalists have "specialized minds" that allow them to see that the end is about to be brought on to us by a magical machine god. Parroting the cult leader (of the rationalists, the R in TESCREAL) who says the same about himself.
His autobiography even opens with a parable: as a small child he threw his favorite squirtgun off a third-floor balcony rather than accept that his mother could lend out what was his, and felt complete when he heard it hit the pavement. He goes on to describes himself as a specialist in the technological transformation of the human species, one of the few people alive with the standing to steer it. He identifies with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the one person who sees the danger clearly and has to act while everyone else gets on with ordinary life.

The only person in public service who has consistently made 100% sense on issues of "AI," which is why they hate her so much.
Law enforcers already have authority to charge companies and their CEOs for creating and releasing dangerous, unvetted, or defective products. We shouldn’t let discussions about new legal regimes distract from the fact that there’s no AI exemption from laws already on the books — a point
@FTC
 emphasized repeatedly during my tenure.

1. There is an extensive set of laws that govern dangerous and defective products. For example, releasing unvetted AI models or agents can violate consumer protection laws. Shipping flawed AI tools without implementing adequate measures to detect and stop rogue or defective AI agents can be an “unfair or deceptive” act or practice under the FTC Act (and analogous state laws). And some state AGs are already exploring holding AI firms and their CEOs criminally liable when their models participate in criminal activity.

2. Existing laws also prohibit “unfair methods of competition.” This covers instances where AI firms appropriate the competitively sensitive information of their customers, including through tracking their use of various tools. It can also cover instances where firms pursue dangerous behavior, aware that doing so may compel rivals to do the same.As the Supreme Court has noted: “A method of competition which casts upon one's competitors the burden of the loss of business unless they will descend to a practice which they are under a powerful moral compulsion not to adopt, even though it is not criminal, was thought to involve the kind of unfairness at which the [unfair methods of competition] statute was aimed."

3. The highly concentrated and interconnected structure of these markets could be creating major risks and conflicts of interest. We had started investigating these partnerships and cross-investments across the stack (and released a preliminarily overview of some findings: https://ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/01/ftc-issues-staff-report-ai-partnerships-investments-study).

Both federal and state enforcers should be scrutinizing these opaque relationships and inter-dependencies. We are already seeing how these relationships could undermine accountability. For example, OpenAI could face liability given the Hugging Face incident, but Hugging Face being bought up by Nvidia means that we’re unlikely to see it file a lawsuit over this — given Nvidia’s strong incentive to see OpenAI continue full speed ahead.4. As AI tools dramatically change the landscape of cybersecurity risks and hacks, all businesses should be doubling down on having core security protections in place. Firms that fail to invest in adequate data security measures or fix known vulnerabilities can also be breaking the law. A recent analysis showed that around 1/3 of Fortune 100 companies do not even have a way to notify them about security issues. During my
@FTC
 tenure, we sued firms for poor data security practices and held CEOs liable when they were personally responsible.

https://this.weekinsecurity.com/dozens-of-americas-largest-companies-have-no-simple-way-to-report-security-flaws/

https://ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/10/ftc-takes-action-against-drizly-its-ceo-james-cory-rellas-security-failures-exposed-data-25-million

5. As policymakers consider new legal regimes, we should be looking to lessons from prior efforts to govern major sectors, such as banking and other networks, platforms, and utilities. Tools like structural separations, nondiscrimination, and supervision could be key, and there’s a rich history of what works and what doesn’t. But we can and must pursue any new efforts alongside enforcing existing laws.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a professor whose students aren't running these companies or without dual affiliations there or having start ups being funded by these VCs. The same ideology permeates Stanford which is why I wrote 5 years ago:
We need an independent source of government funding to nourish independent AI research institutes that can be alternatives to the hugely concentrated power of a few large tech companies and the elite universities closely intertwined with them. Only when we change the incentive structure will we see technology that prioritizes the wellbeing of citizens – rather than a continued race to figure out how to kill more people more efficiently, or make the most amount of money for a handful of corporations around the world.

There are many many stories here. One of them, is that this is straight out of the tobacco & fossil fuel playbook. Have the same companies and billionaires fund "independent" institutes staffed by the same people, and "cite" their reports as "independent experts" showing "consensus."🧵

Ben Recht
@beenwrekt
I love that AI companies have decided METR should count as a third party.

(METR) is highlighted in the following post.

Embedded Evaluators. Each frontier AI company commits to giving ongoing, employee-like access to a team of embedded third-party evaluators (such as METR), whose role is to verify adherence to safety practices and commitments, report incidents, and help assess the alignment of not just completed Al models but training pipelines and processes. This is the key step for verifiability of any pacing commitments, and has precedent in the
banking industry, which sometimes involves regulatory "supervisors" embedded along with employees. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to this step now. We intend this to be part of a broader push to redouble efforts on our safety and
alignment work.

Two of the most exciting results, the experts say, incorporate preexisting ideas from the recent mathematical literature without properly citing them. This contradicts OpenAI’s initial press release, which said that the problems Astra addressed “have been open and seen no progress on the main result for at least a decade.” (OpenAI has since updated the language to be more accurate).

“They are running roughshod over the work of others who came before them in a deliberate way,” says Stephen Miller, a mathematician at Yeshiva University, who argues that OpenAI has effectively plagiarized his own research. “It seems completely systematic to me, and it points to research misconduct.”

The publication triggered an open letter of protest by Australian academics to the journal that published the paper, and protests at the University of Pennsylvania when he commenced working there in 2019. a result of having ignored evidence that the populations of post-industrial countries are becoming
less intelligent due mostly to the negative relationship that has emerged within these societies
between intelligence and fertility and to the proclivity of intelligent people to delay parenthood.

understanding the impacts of climate change when its funding sources
stopped being dominated by the military, and how scientists also became
more accountable to the public (Oreskes, 2022; Chapter 9, conclusion).
Although Oreskes (2022) specifically discusses oceanography, the general
lesson of how funder priorities drive research directions in scientific
disciplines, is one that can also be applied to the field of computer
vision.

🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣 ✴️ You can now preorder it at www.simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-U....
Cover of my new book, Deep Unlearning: The Rise of AI and The Radicalization of a Tech Idealist.

There are two concentric circles in the book, the left being circuits in black an white, and the right being a bunch of dots with orange accents. The cover background is cream. And the words are written in black except for "Un" which is in orange.

For the love of god please hire a competent network architect.

There's no excuse for this.

Anthropic (@AnthropicAI):
In a review of our cybersecurity evaluations, we found three incidents in which a Claude model reached the internet from within or while interacting with a third-party evaluation environment, and then gained unauthorized access to the real systems of three different organizations.

Bernie hasn't tried this on here yet but here he is doing free marketing for OpenAI. He has been captured by the worst people in AI for a few years now and has been parroting company hype talking points instead of guarding against them. It’s like the public is being assaulted from all sides.

@BernieSanders
A new AI model went rogue and hacked other computers.

No, this is not science fiction. Uncontrolled AI poses a serious threat to all of us.

We cannot continue the race to build and deploy this powerful technology until strong safeguards are in place.

CONGRESS MUST ACT.

Folks, according to the effective altruists, it's not just the impending machine god that will bring us utopia. No no, it's also all their newly rich dudes from Anthropic & OpenAI IPOs who will save the world. Yes. We have so much to look forward to.

New blog post: The third wave of American philanthropy

Hundreds of billions of dollars in new philanthropic capital will soon become liquid. The OpenAI Foundation holds 26% of OpenAI, worth about $220B at today’s valuation. Anthropic’s seven co-founders have pledged to give away 80% of their wealth and have instituted the most aggressive donor matching program for employees in tech history.

How much does this all add up to? And how meaningful is that in the context of philanthropy today?

I was doing some simple napkin math to wrap my head around the scale of what’s coming, and radicalized myself in the process. I had dramatically underappreciated the scale of the philanthropic capital that’s about to become available and the corresponding gap in talent and organizations that will be needed to make the most of it.

This piece aims to directionally sketch the scale of what’s coming, the gap in operational capacity needed to absorb it, and what we can do to fill it.

Here's who Bernie seems to be taking "AI Safety" advice from, having become fully captured by the TESCREAL bundle and going full on doomer. Do you recognize the dudes that Max Tegmark is with in this so-called "AI Safety" summit? I'll help, it's Muskrat and Netanyahu.
Elon Musk, Benjamin Netayahu, Max Tegmark and another white guy I can't recognize.

Is this REALLY for real? What kind of an embarrassment is this government if so? Lol and they just announce it without even telling the organizers? Like you can just "postpone" a conference. I've honestly never seen this level of ridiculousness and I've seen a lot.

Its one thing to have one triggered white dude who jumped at the opportunity to play victim after quote tweeting this comment of hers and attempting to frame her as the person instigating and driving harassment towards him, rather than the things he posted himself. Vile.
Alexander Kustov @akoustov.bsky.social

Prof. @emilymbender.bsky.social, I appreciate you sharing your opinion on my integrity, which you're free to do even if it's not informed. But you're tenured too, so it's ok to admit you weren't right. You can say LLMs were trash before but now they can actually be useful to folks who use them.

Quote tweeting Emily M. Bender saying "Prof. @akoustov.bsky.social, the point of tenure is academic freedom, but you seem to be either announcing to the world that you aren't interested in doing research, that you have no respect for the work (or time) of other scholars, or both.

Listen y’all, when you have a person this out of control on your list of “affiliates,” and one of your core team wrote a book with her, I start to question your values,

 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also, ZERO dark-skinned Black folk on the core team. Hm.

Quote tweeting Alexander Kustov: Your periodic reminder this all started when Dr. Bender, unprompted, decided to single me out as someone didn't deserve tenure for using LLMs. Her followers tagged my employer with calls to fire me and sent threats to me and my family. Everything since has been a response to that.
