Honestly, @wikifur.bsky.social is a joke sometimes. This is the attendance table from their “Featured” article about #Anthrocon. I tried to clean it up, removing the entirely redundant columns containing nothing but question marks, and was given 2 week ban for “Unacceptable editor behavior”.

IMO, the new toggles are a great and welcome addition, but they do not replace the removed option. I guess they no longer believe one can be in an open relationship without actively looking for a sexual hookup 🤷‍♂️ Two steps forward, one step back.

Here in Sweden, homosexuality was classified as an illness until the end of the 70's. By the end of this period, right before the classification was dropped, people actually protested it by calling in sick to their workplaces and essentially saying "sorry, I'm feeling quite gay today".

I think 3rd gen was the sweet spot. 2nd gen works great as well, but 3rd gen did add some very welcome improvements without (from what I can tell) decreasing usability. 4th gen meanwhile just tried too hard to replace a set top box added too much extra stuff beyond the one thing you actually want.

Misusing certain words to create a certain narrative doesn't mean those words are exclusive to that narrative though, or that they don't have other legitimate uses. So let's not demonize the word itself, but rather the wrongful narrative as a whole.

You don't, Pakistan does. An expat is only an expat in the eyes of their home country, and an immigrants to everyone else. But it feels we're just arguing the usage of the term. But that's just how language works. Everyone will choose words that benefit their image.

So if the context is those coming into the country, or a specific country where people moved to, then yeah those people are immigrants. But when discussing just people moving away from your own country to somewhere else more as a general thing, emigrant or expat IMO is fine at least linguistically.

Probably not, but I don't pay attention shitty news media like fox news. Still, I maintain the relative aspect here. To the US they're immigrants but to themselves they're emigrants. An expat is an expat regardless of the country they move to. But immigrants are immigrants only to that country.

Going by the dictionary definition, it's just short for expatriate, meaning someone who presently resides outside of their country of origin. I've never seen or considered that as being political at all, merely just an indicator of viewpoint (origin country vs residing country).

I'm American, so I wouldn't know the British perspective. I just know we Americans generally use expat to refer to someone who moved away from their country. And an immigrant meanwhile is someone who moved into the country. An American expat is thus also a European immigrant.

But aye, in the context of person X from country Y having moved to country Z, I would generally phrase it: "X is an expat/emigrant from Y." or "X is an immigrant to Z."

I just mean it depends on context. In my eyes, expat is just a synonym for emigrant. The main different seems to be that emigrant used more for permanent emigration whereas expat is generally more a temporary thing (e.g. related to working or studying abroad).
