Ironically it's around the halfway mark I keep stopping! I never make it that far past Timeless River. Been hearing for over a decade about how good the Critical Mode postgame is in 2 and I've never given myself the opportunity to either appreciate it or say every fan of this game is wrong.

I did finish and really like 358 so this is a compelling argument. I gotta learn who he wound up having ice cream with.

The first definitely went down smoother at launch, when that kind of big budget action RPG was still pretty rare. Loved it as a kid, but my replays wind up feeling like a slog. I might have an essay in me about this, actually.

If I’ve started and not finished Kingdom Hearts 2 five times in my life, do I buy it again and hope that sixth time’s a charm #blutoid

I can forgive the timing, but it was pretty messed up for you to bring a fourth grader into this just to talk to him about fascism and George H. W. Bush. (Fun read, good review)

Google’s AI summary thinks Gades saying “THIS is what I would call frue destruction!” is from Lufia II when it is in fact from Lufia: The Legend Returns for the Game Boy. So much knowledge at its disposal and it can’t even pretend to be a Lufia fan accurately, just absolutely pathetic. #blutoid
A Google AI summary that reads “Frue destruction!” Is a famous good-bad translation error from Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals that became a long-running meme among fans of the series.” This information is incorrectA screenshot of Lufia: The Legend Returns. Gades is shown saying “THIS is what I would call true destruction!”

Sure let’s add another all-timer SNES RPG to 2027. Lufia 2’s still got some of the absolute best dungeon design to this day. #blutoid

I hate when a difference between difficulty options is "gain more EXP" or "gain less EXP." I don't want the challenge to be that I have to grind more, and if I need to lower the difficulty just to save time, I don't feel like I'm actually beating the game on the mode I selected.

I’d get drunk on that kind of e-drama as a teenager. Now I’ve had the hangover so many times that I kinda skip past the intrigue and go right into the sickness. Like bully the billionaires and bigots, but otherwise, there are bigger problems in life than someone posting something really dumb.

Obviously, it’s hard for a game like this to stand out today when we’re drowning in Metroidvanias and Zelda 2-likes. That said, I love that the original devs are attached to this and I wish them nothing but the best.

Never thought I’d see a Battle of Olympus remake. Instantly had the music blast in my head like I was 5 again. I kind of love the 8-Bit to 16-Bit upgrade. Makes it really feel like it was pulled from an alternate reality where the game got the Super Mario All-Stars treatment in the 90s. #blutoid

I really think Terranigma is the ultimate expression of what video games can be. Every facet of it, from mechanics to visuals, all build to a deeply symbolic and beautiful reflection of humanity that embraces joy and pain in equal measure. I will gladly take any excuse to play it again.

AI hallucination of the day: Typed the name of a bar with a basic name into Google, AI summary says "there is no bar called [name] in [town]" despite the page for said bar appearing *right alongside it*. It could've just spat the dictionary definition of the name, but it worked so hard to be wrong!

I very specifically remember resonating with a review you wrote where you pushed back on the glamorization of rural life, I still bring that up from time to time! I don't know if "lived in rural area" and "memorized the lyrics of Fhqwhgads" is causation or correlation, but 100% a connection.

Crazy thing is, I was absolutely a total internet gremlin as a teenager and lived on forums (for reasons described above). And while there was a *lot* of garbage I have no nostalgia for, that environment still felt warmer than the modern social media age. I still chat with friends from that era.

Seeing the responses to this drives home how rural the rural small town I grew up in was. Weekends were, at best, jumping off cliffs into water and rolling down sandpits if you didn’t want to sneak mom’s vodka underneath the bridge. Admittedly, still a step up from doomscrolling in your room.

I actually thought Langrisser Mobile was solid when I played it. Can't speak for it now, because FOMO and daily grinds inevitably burns me out of every gacha. But even if this is a Unicorn Overlord ripoff, those memories were pleasant enough that I'll likely dip into this (and burn out fast again).
000
Timothy Monbleau @timmonbleau.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Honestly, I'm more surprised that Langrisser Mobile did well enough to survive for seven years and get a sequel game when Square can't even keep an FF7 gacha alive for three. I'm also kinda tickled that this somehow looks less fanservice-y than Langrisser Mobile, even with the jiggling on display.

On one hand, I use my Steam Deck more just because I like to take my PC games on the go. On the other hand, the Switch 2 is much lighter, easier to set up on a TV, and has games I can't play on other platforms. I could've lived without it, but I am happy I have it.

It is kinda amazing how people writing about video games will spend every waking hour on the job for peanuts in return and somehow there just isn’t any money in the budget for them.

So this is weirdly similar to something that happened to my mom. She was looking for an old video of a dance she performed in the 80s, and Google spat out an *entire hallucinated biography* about her supposed life as a professional dancer. Quickest I've seen someone realize AI has no credibility.

I can’t wait for Microsoft to enter its 3DO era. #blutoid
An excerpt from the Wikipedia page for the 3DO game console. It reads “Licensing to independent manufacturers made the system extremely expensive. The manufacturers had to make a profit on the hardware itself, whereas most major game console manufacturers, such as Sega and Sony, sold their systems at a loss, with expectations of making up for the loss with software sales. The 3DO was priced at US$699,[23][24] far above competing game systems and aimed at high-end users and early adopters. Hawkins has argued that 3DO was launched at $599, and not "higher myths that are often reported".[25] In a later interview, Hawkins clarified that while the suggested retail price was $699, not all retailers sold the system at that price.”

Just catching up on announcements now, but Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is SUCH a good choice for the next gacha-to-console conversion. It was already a classic Final Fantasy in spirit, and now the story gets to be properly immortalized in the FF canon. Really high hopes for this.

Yeah it's Nintendo being Nintendo, but staying out of the graphical arms race is a big deal in this climate. I think the reality is that a lot of people will (or already have) cut their entertainment spending, but a Switch 2 is relatively attainable for people looking for a new console at least.
020
Timothy Monbleau @timmonbleau.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Devil's Advocate take: People who were priced out of the Switch 2 probably weren't looking at a pricier home console either. It just took a minute for *everything* to get way more expensive and make Nintendo the "cheap" option again, unless you count the $70 emulation handhelds.

It’s 100% an SEO thing. Making a new article confuses Google, so updating the old one gives (or gave?) it a shot to increase its ranking. It was weirdly funny since my whole angle with that was how Zelda rankings are so personal. Nowadays it doesn’t make the top 100 list of things I’m bothered by.

Gonna pop my head up to let you all know I have a review of Mina The Hollower coming soon. Life hasn't exactly gotten easier, so I wasn't able to finish in time for the embargo. But rest assured that Mr. "Link's Awakening is the best Zelda" has some thoughts about this. #blutoid
