Love Brauhaus Alter Bahnhof. Really worth the effort off the beaten track.

The Barley Mow in Dorset St, which Nairn described as a “place for romantic indiscretion or flogging atomic secrets” is still going strong and as superb as ever.

Zum Goldenen Handschuh, opposite Elbschlosskeller, is also well dodgy, a haunt of serial killer Fritz Honka. Those Czech dives look great…and a tad less intimidating.

Elbschlosskeller in Hamburg gets my vote as the sketchiest in Europe. Somebody genuinely died at the bar…and it took them a while to realise…

Loved the Cluedo pub trail, particularly the kind gesture by Retiredmartin to provide a taxi service!

Irony is not a quality that comes easy to Oasis.

The Hacienda opened more than ten years before Oasis were formed. It’s like claiming the Rubettes were the trigger for the Age of Enlightenment. Except more ridiculous.

I’ve lived in Madrid for a couple of years and my Spanish is pretty basic. Service can be abrupt but most bars are friendly and efficient. It’s worth brushing up with one or two key phrases - the effort is much appreciated.

Used to love Clärchens in the days of the impeccable covers band and “everyone welcome” door policy. All ages used to dance until dawn…but now the old bohemian vibe has been replaced by a corporate conformity.

I've often been intrigued by the origin of the name of Berlin's Möve im Felsenkeller. The literal Google translation is Seagull in the Rock Cellar. The "Möve" or gull, element of the name came from a previous landlord who owned the maritime-themed pubs - the Storch and the Penguin Bar.

There was nothing particularly “kind” about her turning her back on a youth orchestra playing Ode to Joy at the European Parliament. Whatever your political hue, it was cheap and spiteful.

Perfectly reasonable suggestion…except in politically sensitive bubbles such as trans rights you’ll be accused of sticking your oar in despite online safety being something that affects us all.

You actually self describe as “angry” which isn’t the best place to start any rational debate.

Tim Evans @timmo5.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Well, if you’re not willing to declare who you are - like plenty of trans people are happy to do - you’ll have to accept that your opinions will be taken less seriously.

Hardly surprising from a click-chasing rag that ran this drivel about Spain being “full” of these weird, licensed Franco shrines. There’s about six…and they’re treated with ridicule.

Spain has banned Francoist symbols. So why is the country still full of kitsch cafes glorifying the dictator? | Abbas Asaria
These unsettling and unusual places tell a vivid story about the unique way that Spain deals with its past – or fails to, says food writer and chef Abbas Asaria
