Massachusetts people are crazy. It’s a nice enough day on the Cape to get my toes wet, but the number of people swimming in the frigid water boggles my mind.

The CAANN competition ran this summer, with many universities across the country applying and results to be announced September 15. Instead, after running the whole competition, Trump claimed that foreign language education is part of a "woke" agenda and harmful spending.

The Boston Public Library courtyard would be a little oasis of peace in the midst of the city … except for the hundreds of tourists who have heard that the Boston Public Library courtyard is a little oasis of peace in the midst of the city and rush through to take a picture during their city tour.

After you’ve spent the afternoon canning, there’s something very satisfying about the “plink” sound the jars make as they vacuum seal.

The idea that this group thinks children are always better off with their biological parents, even if they are abusive or negligent is an attack not just on gay and lesbian parents but on all adoptive families, single parents, divorced parents. These bigots are dangerous.

Seth Moulton’s support for the Trans rights popped up on my feed, & the comments are fascinating. Mostly awful transphobes claiming trans people face no discrimination but others calling Moulton out for throwing trans folks under the bus after the last election. Doubt this won many voters over.

The governor of Indiana declared June “Nuclear Family Month,” and I have thoughts. First, I wonder what percentage of Indiana’s families have one husband, one wife, and biological children living with their parents. I’m guessing it’s not a majority, considering death, divorce, adoption, gay parents.

The DoD’s consolidation of religions was clearly done by someone who doesn’t know much about America religion. Imagine a Church of Christ chaplain for someone from the UCC! And putting Reform Judaism in the Reformed Christian tradition is just pure ignorance.

For five decades, the Title VI program funded less commonly taught languages, especially African and Asian languages. The Trump administration is now replacing it with Centers Aligned with Areas for National Need. The languages they list are ALL European languages, clearly revealing their priorities
Webpage on Centers Aligned with Areas for National Need"This program provides grants to institutions of higher education (IHEs) or consortia of IHEs to address one or more of the following areas of national need by teaching modern foreign languages, such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Czech, and other languages; providing instruction in fields needed to provide understanding of areas, regions, or countries in which the language is used; supporting research and training in international studies and the international and foreign language aspects of professional and other fields of study; and providing instruction and research on issues in world affairs in areas such as Latin America, Europe, and Russia."

People are not making enough of the increasingly blatant racist (and misogynistic) policies of the Trump administration. I mean, we're all aware that MAGA has a white supremacist agenda, but the level of outrage at the daily affronts to equality and dignity are way too muted.

Ceclia Vega's denunciation of CBS news is truly damning.
In recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories. Reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions.

Let’s call this what it is: censorship, both imposed and self-driven. It is dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.

I held the line and refused to incorporate suggestions that offend the conscience, a phrase I borrow from a colleague who has also fought to keep questionable editorial suggestions away from the facts. I know from many conversations with colleagues that many producing teams and correspondents working on the show today have had to fight to maintain editorial independence with regularity. I am far from the only 60 Minutes correspondent who has asked herself, “What is my personal red line? How much can I push back before I pay the price?”

Working on a paper, I’ve gone back to notes from a USAID mission I did in 2020, and I’m struck that the first note on the first page of the notebook says USAID’s #1 priority in Congo was “ending Ebola outbreak.” This was under Trump. Too bad USAID isn’t around to save us anymore.

It’s hard to screw up the World Cup, but the Trump administration and FIFA leadership seem determined to make 2026 a disaster: hostile policies keeping foreign tourists away, empty hotels, clunky coordination with local communities, widespread public indifference … just one failure after another.

I was listening to Noah Kahan's "Staying Still," and these lyrics jumped out at me, since my bicycle commute home runs along Storrow, where I have certainly passed a lot of stuck trucks and an occasional track teams.
Noah Kahan lyrics:
But the Charles meets the sun
And the Harvard track team runs
Past my truck, stuck on Storrow
And I never ask for much
But I hope that Logan crumbles and gets hit by a tornado

Markey was fantastic at the latest No Kings march. He was energetic, funny, charismatic, and his leftist politics were much more in tune with Massachusetts than Moulton. Despite the fact that I believe that Democrats need a new generation of leaders, I will be voting for Markey.
