Never heard of this movie, but it is right up my street. A 14th century murder mystery with Connery and Christian Slater? Come on, that sounds amazing www.theguardian.com/culture/2026...

‘I spat in Sean Connery’s face 16 times’: Ron Perlman on making The Name of the Rose
‘When I couldn’t do the spitting scene, Sean took me aside and said: “Ron, if you don’t actually spit in my face, we’ll be here all day.” So I let one fly – and kept having to redo it’

The way the booze creates his anaesthetised fighting mania reminds me of the finale in Young Master, which is one of my favourites ever. It's all done outside, very few props, but the fight is so well choreographed, it practically has a three act structure – it's extraordinary.

Been writing a very dour, death-of-the-Earth space exodus short story, in which colonists fly to distant galaxies in tin cans living out their lives without ever seeing a sky – and realised I'm writing "FML space travel"

Bought this old 90s Aiwa PX-E850 turntable on eBay for like £30. Turns out it uses the same cartridge as some Audio-Technica decks – which means you can upgrade the stylus for £25 Considering it has a pretty decent inbuilt phono amp, that makes this a very affordable entry into vinyl...

I don't know if it was the best, but one of the most memorable I had was the Nokia 3250, the bottom quarter of which housed the keyboard on the front, mp3 player buttons on the back and a camera on the side, and rotating that part automatically opened the camera or music player. A haptic delight

Imagine using someone's intestines as a rope to get a phone so you can escape and then it gets CONFISCATED

Oh my god, reading the plot of Saw X and just rolling around in hysterics, this stuff Is gold "I just want to be absolutely clear, you're saying I have to drill into my skull, pick out some brain, and then dissolve it in a beaker… right? dissolve my brain, ok, and then I'll magically get a key?"
Valentina is tasked with severing her leg with a Gigli saw and extracting enough bone marrow to trigger a scale and deactivate the trap. She manages to amputate her leg but is unable to collect enough marrow, and a second Gigli saw decapitates her. Cecilia later uses Valentina's intestines as a rope to retrieve her phone and call for help, but Amanda shocks her into submission and confiscates the phone.

Parker breaks into the clinic, demanding his money back. Amanda restrains him while Mateo is forced to drill into his own skull and remove a piece of cerebral tissue to dissolve in a beaker and obtain a key. Although he successfully performs the task, the tissue fails to dissolve in time, and a heated mask closes over his face, killing him. Next, Gabriela is suspended from shackles and subjected to ionizing radiation, tasked with freeing herself by using a sledgehammer to break her shackled limbs. She succeeds, but before Amanda can take her to a hospital, Parker forces them at gunpoint to release Cecilia.

George Saunders on teaching literary criticism (and absolutely mauling the Bruce Lee quote)
Throughout, I'll be offering some models for thinking about stories.
No one of these is "correct" or sufficient. Think of them as rhetorical trial balloons. ("What if we think about a story this way? Is that use-ful?") If a model appeals to you, use it. If not, discard it. In Buddhism, it's said that a teaching is like "a finger pointing at the moon." The moon (enlightenment) is the essential thing and the pointing finger is trying to direct us to it, but it's important not to confuse finger with moon. For those of us who are writers, who dream of someday writing a story like the ones we've loved, into which we've disappeared pleasur-ably, and that briefly seemed more real to us than so-called reality, the goal ("the moon") is to attain the state of mind from which we might write such a story. All of the workshop talk and story theory and apho-ristic, clever, craft-encouraging slogans are just fingers pointing at that moon, trying to lead us to that state of mind. The criterion by which we accept or reject a given finger: "Is it helping?" I offer what follows in that spirit.

Regular reminder that JG Ballard’s final novel, “Kingdom Come” (2006), is about a far-right English town which creates their own militarised breakaway state in a shopping mall, where they worship the gods of St George and consumerism. Old JG wrote it as tongue-in-cheek satire. At the time.
