One way or another, the Phillies losing Fuld after all these years of bringing him along and never giving him a chance because they're so committed to Dombrowski, who clearly has no plan, would be wild

There are already two teams in a spot on the win curve where spending could be critical that are saying they won't spend this offseason

For a guy with such steady year-end lines, he's streaky. He'll annoy people at times. He won't play as much as they want. And he's still very clearly the best option to solve a problem that's been around for years

I understand he'll be 32. I also understand his lowest OBP in MLB has been .326 and is often well above, is right-handed, and at times has played competent outfield defense

I am displeased but shrugging. They made it to October after running on fumes at the end and being flawed all season. I'm just hoping they keep it interesting

Very much a Harris home run earned more than a classic Nola homer surrendered. Unpleasant to have such a large plop in the "shit happens" bucket so early

Since the game’s about to start, let’s do one more link to my NYY-BOS Game 2 preview. It’s a fun read, or informative, one or the other.

Patrick is a stone cold freak for dropping writing this good into the intro of what is a useful, but fairly formulaic Game 2 preview format: www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...
There’s an element to sports that sportswriters never weary of trying to capture, hacking through the kudzu of metrics and quotations to get at. It’s the paradox of a sense of overwhelming immortality, mixed with a sense of how fleeting that omnipotence is. Athletes hypnotize themselves into attaining it, fans slurp at it like a shallow oasis in the desert, writers build entire novels constructing a world to provide it. The Boston Red Sox lost a pair of games to the Washington Nationals by 15 runs around the end of June, and then seized that invincibility and held it for more than five full weeks, enjoying a run almost unparalleled in the history of baseball. It was like snorting cocaine while on a runner’s high after finding out you’d aced a college final and fallen in love, all at the same time.

Unfortunately, that time happened to be July, and by the end of September it was a happy memory. Baseball took that perfect month and chewed away at it with its sharp little teeth, as it always does, pulling at hamstrings and snapping bones. And on Tuesday, the capricious and hateful gods of baseball took it and provided it to one Ben Rice, handed him the thunderbolts to strike the heroes down. For one day it was the Yankees who were invincible, led by the league’s best pitcher and a hitter whose resting face might best be described as vague concern, even as their captain stood with his elbows on the dugout railing. The New York Yankees are now, today and only today, the greatest team in baseball. But maybe not tomorrow. The gods need fresh meat.

This is not to absolve them of anything. They are deeply flawed and excruciating to endure.

The Phillies have blown it the last few postseasons but the last couple in particular have been loaded with moments that are matters of inches that also happen to not go their way. The first one played a run for the Braves today, but the second one is why the Phillies lost

I can't believe people are talking about this. Harris had crossed first base before the throw even got halfway to Harper. It was an infield hit all the way. Like, don't sweat the small stuff, guys. Turner's throw affected nothing.
