Saw Pavement at Mosswood Meltdown last Fri, and the thing that really stays with me is their intro from John Waters: "Ah, the 90's, I was already old. You weren't, but now you are.... Oh, youth. Guess what? You'll never get it back. But here's the next best thing. Pavement!"

"no one is in the saddle forever"
... Think even of the longest lasting fascist or authoritarian dictatorships. Franco? About 35 years. Pinochet? 16 years, ousted by a referendum. I don’t imagine this will last for even a tiny fraction of that length of time. My point is simply to demonstrate the incontestable point: no one remains in the saddle forever.

I hear all these people telling me how there won’t be a 2026 election, or that it won’t be free and fair or a bunch of other things. My question to them or maybe to you is what are you going to do about it? History is long. No one is in the saddle forever.

I hope everyone reading this will subscribe to TPM and go read the full version (short thread)
“That’s why censorship is the authoritarian’s dream,” Carr wrote at the time. He knows what he’s doing. I want lawmakers to be telling people like Carr and his ilk not that they’ll have regrets but that they’ll face consequences.

And then there’s a sequel fans have been clamoring for: Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion with Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino. Cumming confirms he’ll reprise Sandy Frink. “It’s so great. The script is really exciting. We were supposed to do it this year, but Lisa was shooting The Comeback. I think we’re shooting next year. I’m so excited,” he says.

Am I wrong in thinking that Columbia has already accepted an agreement where the government dictates what they can teach and research and whom they can fire?
Ms. Shipman wrote that Columbia would “reject heavy-handed orchestration from the government that could potentially damage our institution and undermine useful reforms.” She said that any agreement in which federal officials dictated “what we teach, research, or who we hire” would be unacceptable.

As many others are observing, there's something quite irritating about being pirated without being asked or even notified. Is there a class action lawsuit somewhere?

This is such a smart take from @rosalafersousa.bsky.social. Americans want American STEM to succeed and lots of folks who would be sympathetic aren't hearing from us in a direct and emotional way! So #MathSky please share your stories and sign up for activism here: www.ams.org/government/r...
Lafer-Sousa said her goal is to amplify the stories of early-career scholars and help the average American understand the erosion of scientific research.

“I want her on a news channel in Missouri, on a local news channel where people are like,‘Oh, she went to my high school, she went to go pursue her dreams,’” Lafer-Sousa said of the Pitt applicant, who is from St. Louis. “I want them to hear her story, because they’re not reading The New York Times, they’re not watching Rachel Maddow. We need to reach them.”

I actually tried the app a few days ago, wrote the AMS when it didn't work, and they said that the app was supposed to be ready today? But NBD, these things happen
Email from Nancy Simone at AMS:

Dear Tim,
Thank you for your email. We are running a little late on our new app. It is not “live” yet. We hope to release it on Tuesday. Your email credentials should work then.
