I love how prominent a role mini-golf plays in the material this account shares. So many leisure activities take themselves so seriously nowadays that it's a nice reminder of how endearing kitsch can be. Imagine this level of whimsy at an ax-throwing place. There's no way.

Grading the TGL's debut match from my seat inside the SoFi Center
While there is no substitute for the real thing, the new indoor professional golf league offered compelling glimpses at how high-tech, short-form golf could work.

Cabot Citrus Farms' Roost course is a stirring addition to Florida's hottest golf resort: Review
Three architects and an "architecture consultant" pitched in to create a more subdued but still intense companion to the resort's manic Karoo course.

CABOT CITRUS FARMS (ROOST) Brooksville, Fla. Franz/Nuzzo/Whitman/Morrissett, 2024 $395 Course #661 Better & less manic than Karoo but often feels like it’s trying out multiple courses’ worth of ideas (most of them very good!) in 18 holes. Super-fast greens mean constant stress.

MOUNTAIN SHADOWS GOLF COURSE Paradise Valley, Ariz. Jack Snyder, 1961 Forrest Richardson, 2016 $100 Richardson’s redo of his mentor’s original is as Midcentury-Modern-revival as golf gets. A gigglingly-fun set of 18 greens in lovely scenery. A playful, mysterious little course.

THE BOULDERS (SOUTH) Carefree, Ariz. Jay Morrish, 1986 $229+ Course #655 The titular rock formations provide some of the coolest hole backdrops in inland golf, and Morrish’s hide-and-seek approach to hole-craft keeps things mysterious. Superb, non-overseeded (!) Bermuda greens.

I love oxtails always, but the oxtails from Chickin Lickin in Hardeeville, S.C. this afternoon were on a whole other level. Spectacular. And the stewed okra & tomatoes? One of the best sides I’ve ever had. Golf connection: very close to Hilton Head. If you’re driving in/out, it’s a must.

Brand-new Broomsedge Golf Club epitomizes the all-in era of golf course design: Review
More than 140 deep, challenging bunkers add drama and challenge to a clever routing by architects Kyle Franz and Mike Koprowski.

BROOMSEDGE GOLF CLUB Rembert, S.C. Kyle Franz & Mike Koprowski, 2024 Private Course #654 Big-feeling routing, tons of bunkers, exciting greens and some entertaining and clever setup flexibility places this intense new design squarely in the contemporary all-in architecture mode.

TRUE BLUE GOLF CLUB Pawleys Island, S.C. Mike Strantz, 1998 $159 Always a treat to play the golf course that sparked my interest in architecture 20+ years ago. The expressiveness of the forms and even its idiosyncrasies still speak to me after hundreds of other courses seen.

OCEAN CREEK GOLF COURSE Fripp Island, S.C. Davis Love III, 1995 $150 #653 Gorgeous marshside holes 6-8 anchor a strong opening dozen. Apparent influences from D. Ross to Harbour Town lend interest to the interior holes. Long underrated, Love & Co. have cooked for 30 years now!

OCEAN POINT GOLF LINKS Fripp Island, S.C. George Cobb, 1964; Cynthia Dye McGarey, 2024 $100+ Course #652 A summer ‘24 renovation project added a beachy aesthetic to this solid, walkable Mid-Mod routing that goes from ocean to forest and back to ocean on each nine. Small greens and bruising par 3s!

Had a great time this weekend playing in a team tournament at my home county golf course, Sandridge Golf Club. Sandridge is a sterling example of municipal golf, thanks in large part to the pros (on the hill next to the speaker) who have run the place for decades.

The year isn’t over, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say Lido (Wisc.; C.B. Macdonald course revived and rebuilt by Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf Design) is my favorite golf course I have played in 2024.
