Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 03/10/2026I will not buy your car unless I can turn off lane departure and speed warnings with a single button! They're not fit for purpose in much of the world. 3110
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 01/10/2026I quizzed it yesterday about why the predicted "weeks of work" took it two hours. Apparently all its estimates are based on humans doing the work 🤷♂️ 190
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 27/09/2026Occasionally it gets to 6am and I'm still not tired so I just skip going to sleep and pretend I've just woken up. Somehow I still manage to stay up until midnight 🤷♂️ 001
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 15/09/2026Client says after 10 years, everything needs moving from Github to Azure for "CRA compliance" 😭 010
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 15/09/2026Tried to buy a replacement bbq grill from a store the other day and found that they had already removed all the "summer" things like bbqs and replaced them with Christmas stuff. And they wonder why Amazon is eating their lunch! 011
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 14/09/2026It also causes the laptop fans to run flat out. Again it's annoying enough that I would still pay $200/month to work in silence 🤷♂️ 000
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 14/09/2026I've been messing with Quen 3.8 running on a new M5 Pro MacBook with 48gb ram, hooked up through vscose/copilot. While it seems pretty competent, it is painfully slow! It's slow enough that it's still easily worth $100-200/per month to save many hours of my time. 130
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 14/09/2026“figure out what to build, not how to build it” Realised recently that I've always actually preferred this role but had a career writing code because I could also do that too. Historically, most of the product engineering roles also involved some sort of management which I wasn't interested in! 010
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 12/09/2026It's not the worst London airport! I've also been through Oslo Gardermoen 144 times in just the last 3.7 years which means on average I'm there every 10 days 😩 110
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 12/09/2026I've only been tracking my flights since 2023 but I estimate I've been through London Gatwick well over 200 times 😬 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 12/09/2026Every time I think about selling software or digital goods online I decide the admin to do it all legally is too much. Either you go with a Merchant of Record or you end up in tax admin hell. 021
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 10/09/2026Miele appliances are very repairable and they offer all the parts for decades. They're just very, very pricey to buy new. My Dad is proud that he buys them broken or 10 years old and keeps them going for another 10 years! 110
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 10/09/2026Charging from an outlet the efficiency losses are less of an issue but from a battery bank with limited capacity it's a crazy choice! 120
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 10/09/2026Maybe it'll be out of beta when they add deep linking to files? 🤷♂️ 000
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 10/09/2026We have a cast iron skillet and also some pans where the handles have a quick release mechanism. It sounds terrifying but I've only ever injured myself with the skillet 🤣 030
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 09/09/2026Not sure I 100% understand what you mean but we always test with the packed t.gz because otherwise you're not testing what the ecosystem sees 111
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 02/09/2026JSON is valid JavaScript so I'm now thinking about hacky solutions 🤣 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 02/09/2026I'd just go with plain old JavaScript and then it will work with any runtime or bundler... 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 02/09/2026Solar MPPT controllers can pick how much power they want to draw from the panels, all the way down to zero... When the batteries are full and no power is consumed in the house, no power is generated from the panels. Solar panels are not like a tap you can't turn off! 161
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 02/09/2026I remember years ago finding out the hard way that chrome had a hard 128mb limit with indexedDb operations because it all went over IPC 🤣 010
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 02/09/2026The solar array and the battery are only half the story. Even with a huge array and battery you need an inverter that can output enough power... 000
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 02/09/2026Excess power? Any system designed to work off-grid will self regulate and there won't be excess power. In some countries it's too complicated to feed into the grid so this is the norm... 120
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 22/08/2026I was planning to be there but didn't put it in the calendar and now there are other commitments 😭 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 20/08/2026We had two huge dead Stone Oak trees felled in our garden. Most of the logs are too big to fit in our wood burner and most of it is too hard to split with an axe. We're trying to find someone with a hydraulic splitter! 120
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 18/08/2026The only thing guaranteed in life is the Airbnb will have no sharp knives and no way to sharpen them 000
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 15/08/2026Their worker support has been listed as experimental for ages. Loads of memory leaks. Maybe the rust port will fix this? 010
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 16/07/2026Ooooh, do bundlers targeting the browser end up stripping these out? 120
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 16/07/2026My wife flies passenger planes into Cyprus and the Israeli GPS spoofing sometimes makes the plane think they are over Beirut 😬 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 09/07/2026I swore I'd never have any home automation because I didn't want to maintain it and I didn't see the point. I take it all back. Today I turned the air conditioning on 4 hours before I got to the house and it was blissful by the time I arrived! 2140
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 09/07/2026I still think they should have waited until they supported the API. Apparently that's coming in 7.1 but this release breaks a lot of LSP plugins that rely on the API and there's nothing they can do to fix it 🤷♂️ 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 06/07/2026There are always cheaper alternatives if you've got the skills and you value your time at zero. I've piad $50 for sensors that I know I can cobble together with $15 of stuff from Amazon. The reason I don't do that is because it'll take hours of my time and I can't RMA it when it stops working! 210
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 06/07/2026I don't find them overpriced considering they seem to offer updates forever. Does anyone else offer that? 100
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 03/07/2026I suppose I'm assuming Bluesky will be more reliable? Higher uptime? I'm also not convinced that my data being in the EU really changes anything. Wherever my data is stored, the companies still have to follow EU rules. 140
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 03/07/2026It seems to mostly depend on how many other flights are leaving/arriving around the same time. If you're arriving, lookup arrivals and see how many other non-schengen passengers you'll be competing with. For Frankfurt this will could be a lot since this includes Lufthansa long haul flights 😬 110
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 03/07/2026I haven't been to Frankfurt recently but I've been between the UK and EU a dozen times to various airports since ESS started. I've also dropped a lot of people off at airports and asked about border control! Waiting times seem to have varied from 5 minutes to 3 hours... Not very helpful I know! 110
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 03/07/2026When the same kind of fixing happened to the LIBOR interest rate and banks got ripped off, the fines totaled $5bn and those involved went to prison! 010
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 03/07/2026Last year my mum rescued a literal ton of books that someone was putting in a skip. Most went to charity but two were very rare first editions that she sold for £1300 😬 110
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 01/07/2026I've started tracking much of our consumption down to devices and was shocked to find that our well pump + supply pump accounts for ~40% of electricity usage! I also skipped 10Gb ethernet when I found out it consumes up to 5w PER PORT. That's around £10 per year per port! 000
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 01/07/2026It's a shame that Electron went with a single entry. The main process is Node and the renderers are Chrome so it's highly unlikely you want to target both with the same code. Opportunity missed! 000
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 30/06/2026In northern EU, heat pumps are used to replace boilers heating radiators or underfloor heating. You can't use radiators/ufh to cool your house unless you like puddles of water everywhere when it's on. 120
Tim Fish @timfish.dev · 30/06/2026I looked into this and you apparently can't use a heat pump to cool your radiators or underfloor heating unless you want puddles of condensation everywhere. You basically need air-to-air heat pumps (aka regular AC) to do cooling. 200
