high school memories 🥲
Photo of the front exterior of Thomas Jefferson High School, a multi-story, symmetrical stone building. Art Deco architectural details are featured. At the center, a wide set of stone stairs leads up to three arched entry doorways below a central tower topped with a clock. Appears to be raining on the photo.

in an instagram post, long time u street restaurant dukem announced their imminent closure. their last day of operation will be november 7. 😓 one of my first regular dinner spots when i moved to dc.
Screenshot of an Instagram post by Dukem Restaurant. It reads:

"To Our Dukem Family and Friends:

After nearly 30 incredible years, it is with heavy hearts that we share the difficult decision to close Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant, including the upstairs lounge.

Our final day of service will be Saturday, November 7, 2026.

Since opening our carryout and market in 1997, Dukem has always been more than just a restaurant. What began as our father Tefera Zewdie's dream grew into a landmark and gathering place for family, friends and community, bringing together longtime lovers of Ethiopian food and those experiencing it for the very first time.

Over the years, we've had the privilege of serving generations of guests. You celebrated with us, gathered around our tables, and joined us upstairs for music, drinks and countless late nights. Those memories and relationships mean more to us than words can express.

To every guest who shared a meal with us, every employee who became part of the Dukem family, and every regular, friend, neighbor and community member who supported us along the way: thank you.

We hope you'll join us during these final weeks to share another meal, raise a glass, reminisce and celebrate the memories we've created together.

It has been one of our family's greatest honors to share our food, culture and hospitality with Washington, D.C. for nearly 30 years.

Thank you for being part of the Dukem story.

With love and gratitude,

Hiwot Gebru, Yodit Tefera, and Lydia Tefera Owner & Family of Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant"

the way they apologized tells me either 1) a significant number of dc area customers deleted their accounts (one ask in the delete doordash campaign), 2) the publicity had tipped the scales to register in corporate, or 3) they missed local revenue targets and attributed it to the camping.

This is what West Virginia’s National Guard members are doing in DC: escorting federal police outside elementary schools during morning drop-off. This is from today in Park View. This isn’t making anyone safer. Shame on Governor Morrisey for going along with Trump’s self-serving occupation.
