Not great Bob! Much of Buncombe County and WNC is now in a D3 drought (Extreme). The ENTIRE STATE of NC is in some sort of drought. #NCwx @wxbrad.bsky.social @timbuckleywx.bsky.social @nws.noaa.gov

You'd be foolish to think any warm-up will last forever at this time of year. A long-lasting run of 70s will be with us Wednesday to Wednesday, but it'll get chilly again after that.

Meteorological winter comes to a close across North Carolina (Dec-Jan-Feb). For the Greensboro area it was: - Cooler than average (nearly 2 degrees) - Still had several warm spells - Above average snowfall - Below average rainfall #ncwx

An amazing day of weather. The second largest temperature jump on record for Greensboro. 24 in the morning to 69 in the afternoon.

A look at snow totals across North Carolina from this major winter storm. The whole state saw at least 2", and most saw more than 6". The highest reports were around a foot and a half!

North Carolina completely covered in snow after our major winter storm this weekend.

We've got some snow on the way this weekend. Amounts will vary across North Carolina. Some areas could really score. Here in the Triad, expecting lower amounts closer to the 3 inch range. Some get more, some get less. Good luck!

We've got another storm heading into the weekend. Be ready for snow, up to several inches. It starts late Friday night and ends late Saturday night. Dry and fluffy for a change. That dry air could cut into amounts for some, but others will hit jackpot in heavier bands. Travel problems!

We're trending toward a second winter storm in a week. This one, very different. All snow! Could be some impressive amounts too. Watching all day Saturday.

We've got a big mess on the way. In all seriousness, this has me concerned. The combination of a few inches of sleet on the roads, then a ton of ice in the trees, will lead to a lot of us stuck at home - in the dark - maybe without heat going into a very cold week.

You know it’s a serious storm when the governor comes out in the storm shirt.

A major winter storm will hit us with sleet and ice this weekend. Enough to cause power outages for many. Be safe. Avoid travel after about 3pm Saturday. Have supplies to last a few days.

Our winter storm for the weekend looks to start as snow and sleet sometime Saturday but finish as sleet and freezing rain on Sunday. A big mess. Be prepared to be stuck for a few days - possibly without power.

I'm very concerned about this winter storm. High totals of either snow, sleet or freezing rain are coming to North Carolina. It will be different in all areas. Either way, travel will be a mess for days. Icy areas could lose power. Very cold air follows the storm.

There are different types of winter weather: There's fun - and then there's dangerous. This weekend's event is looking dangerous in NC. Timing: Saturday *and* Sunday Impacts: Dangerous travel and power outages Snow amounts and ice amounts could be very high, and stick around for days.

Tim Buckley @timbuckleywx.bsky.social · 20/01/2026
We're not going to know the exact details of the weekend storm for a few days. Still, it's time to talk about it. Impacts to travel and power could be large in the Carolinas and last a while. Good to have a plan, because it's been a while for us to have a bigger winter storm.

HEADS UP: Aurora (Northern Lights) may be visible Monday night across North Carolina. Timing: Anytime after sunset through the night Tips: - Use night mode on your phone to try and help you see them. - Get away from city lights.

Significant risk for either heavy snow or heavy ice or both across North Carolina and Virginia Saturday into Sunday. Lots to be worked out, but the potential is really there for problems. Been a while since we had to worry about power outages with a winter storm. #ncwx

Snow will be difficult to come by this weekend in North Carolina. Trends haven't been in our favor so far.

The trend is there now for somebody in the Carolinas to pick up some winter weather on Sunday. The question is who, how much, and all those details. But, we have something to track!

COLD AIR COMING.... Wind chills will be in the low teens Thursday morning, near 20 Thursday afternoon, and low teens again Friday morning. You know what to do. Bundle up and limit outside time.

Snow chances aren't looking so good for this week in NC. Wednesday night will be a mountains-only event. For the weekend, odds favor dry weather for now. If a system can form we have enough cold air to make it interesting. Just stay tuned for now. #ncwx

Getting the jet stream to do *these things* during winter is a good thing if you're trying to get winter weather. Of course, it doesn't always work out. You need cold air and enough moisture as well. We'll have Chance #1 on Thursday. Chance #2 MLK Weekend. Too early for much more detail

Keep an eye out for "hole punch clouds", technically known as fallstreak holes in Central and Eastern NC this afternoon. I'm noticing some showing up on satellite around and southeast of the Raleigh area. #ncwx

Going for an at-home pizzeria experience this year. Making your own dough is key, but getting a baking steel for my oven was a game changer. Can't believe how crispy the crust turns out!

Check out this cloud! It's called a "Lenticular Cloud" -- which can often be mistaken for UFOs. When winds blow over a mountain, the air doesn’t just go up and over—it ripples, like water flowing over a rock in a stream. At the top of those ripples, air cools and moisture condenses into a cloud.

A dreary Saturday is likely across North Carolina. Clouds, occasional showers, and chill. Temps likely only in the 40s and 30s with rain.

"Why is it so windy lately?" I get this question a lot. Winter and spring are our windy months, typically. Wind is created from pressure differences. In these months, we often have strong fronts moving through, bringing changing weather. This leads to wind. Summer is our least windy.

Tim Buckley @timbuckleywx.bsky.social · 28/12/2025
It *usually* snows in January. Here in Greensboro: - two-thirds of the Januarys on record have measurable snow - half have 2+ inches - a third have 4+ inches

NEXT TWO DAYS: Rain, then wind. - Thursday is wet on and off from midday through the overnight - Morning commute dry, evening commute wet - Rain ends overnight and then the winds pick up - Gusty winds of 30+ mph likely on Friday Now you know!

These are areas that are likely to pick up a fresh 1"+ of snow between now and Christmas Day. Confined to the northern-most states. Unlike the first half of the month, cold is retreating for a little while. #WhiteChristmas #snow #weather

In case you missed it, there was a very bright pass of Starlink satellites across North Carolina last night. There will be another chance to see them at 6:01pm Tuesday. It’s not a guarantee they will still be visible.
