I can't help with technique, but I can with learning. When you follow along to learn, follow along as best you can, as you are. On your own, don't always try to do it all. If you find a spot you struggle, work on that, and then the next. The dance goes easy when you know every step by heart.

Considering I give myself at least a month of practice before I consider myself competent in any kata, I think you are doing just fine. Do not rush yourself. Mastery takes repetition. You don't practice a sword stroke, until you get it right, you practice until you no longer get it wrong.

Yup. First and foremost I am a mini painter, Battletech, of course, but a lot of fantasy as well, which is how I got into any kind of (not Battletech, played that before the minis) wargamming. By the time I got really introduced to Warhammer 40K the edgelords and 'serious gamers' were the majority.
