I’m beginning to think that social media might not be a human good.

Agreed. I think it's become an excuse to be artlessly dark, grim without reason, just misery piled on misery. My response was a little facetious.

Going through the edits for the next book. So far the editor has found four different spellings for one of the main characters. *le sigh*

Yes. The term is "grimdark"

I tend to view commercial fiction as having three components: Plot, Prose, and Character. Most popular books lean heavily on one or two of those. The books I enjoy most engage all three.

Volition is irrelevant. If the headline was "vicious dog breaks out of OpenAI office and bites man" there would be no question who was responsible. "But the dog is its own entity making its own choices!" Fuck off, either it's property you own or not, you can't have it both ways.

I'm a full time author and an avid reader. Reading is a large part of my identity. I finish reading... maybe... ten books a year. Sometimes as few as five.

Broke 10k words on the third Party of One book. I don't have a title, yet. But I have 10k words!

Then I'm at a complete loss. That *looks* like a cover that was printed without a bleed and then mis-trimmed. But if you've got the usual quarter inch of image beyond the print area then I'm baffled at what they're doing. I ran this past my designer and she couldn't offer any further advice. Sorry!

Tim Akers @timakers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Sure, but that just means they got it right once. Which is why you include a bleed to account for slippage in the printing process.
100
Tim Akers @timakers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Did you include a bleed around the edges?

I encourage people to buy from indie bookstores, then chains, then direct from author, then Amazon. But ultimately Amazon serves readers, gives them exactly what they want, how they want it, at the price they want. it's difficult to overcome.

Tim Akers @timakers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Amazon is ultimately not your friend as an author. They monetize an author's desire for ranking via their ad platform. Their discoverability algorithms are no match for in-store browsing. And their ability to quash an author without explanation is extraordinary.

Tim Akers @timakers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I agree and disagree. Amazon has opened the gates for writers to bypass the trad market, and I applaud that. Amazon is a greater threat to booksellers than publishers, and has made backlist/backcatalog items available that would have otherwise disappeared. But...

Less VCs, more conglomerates. And yes, the way publishers treat their employees is terrible. It gatekeeps positions to folks who can live in NYC on poverty wages, puts impossible demands on staff, etc. The problem is that the supply of starry-eyed aspirants is endless

Where my complaint falls apart is the fact that royalty percentages also haven't changed, and those advances are theoretically easier to earn out. But then you have to start talking about how stagnant book prices are compared to other entertainment options, etc.

Tim Akers @timakers.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Even so, book prices have been remarkably stagnant compared to the rest of the segment. The mass market I bought in high school was $7, the mm for that first contract was $8, and the most recent was $9. Of course, the segment is dead...

Something that doesn't get talked about is the fact that writer's advances don't get adjusted for cost of living. The good advance I got in 2009 is the same good advance on my current contract. It's just industry standard.

I don't know Canadian law, but in the US the executor is often the beneficiary as well, especially in cases where there's only a single beneficiary named.

Having a graphic designer for a wife means that when I need to describe a violet-skinned person turning green with nausea, we get to spend ten minutes with photoshop and discussing additive vs subtractive colors. We decided on light blue.

Trad publishers are letting indie readers do their slush reading for them. When an indie author finds success, they just swoop in, sign the author, profit. If you want success as a trad author, succeed as an indie first.

One odd thing about the writer's journey: it's amazing how fast you go from Someone no one knows YET to Someone no one knows ANYMORE
