Made it round to @allypallyparkrun.bsky.social to help give out finish tokens. I’m not able to do parkrun at the moment so it’s worth repeating how valuable simply getting out and seeing people, as well as helping out can be. #parkrun is a lot more than the running & walking. #loveparkrun

To be honest I didn’t pay them much attention (for various reasons), but I think there was some common ground. The irony is that as residents of the ward they ended up with Labour councillors. We live in interesting times.

So for the first time since 1971 (I think) Haringey Council isn’t under Labour. Control. Green Party: 28 Labour Party: 21 Liberal Democrats: 8 I hope the three parties can find ways to work together for the benefit of everyone in the borough. #haringey #localelections

It’s worth noting that the presence of two active independents rather muddied the waters here. Without them I suspect the Lib Dems would have got in.

Managed my first parkrun of 2026 yesterday, & first in new age category. After @allypallyparkrun.bsky.social was cancelled for the second week running we made it to Pymmes parkrun for a potter round. At least Ally Pally managed a NYD event this year where I made my Run Directing debut. #loveparkrun

Down to White Hart Lane for tonight’s football as Haringey Borough take on Wormley Rovers at Coles Park. Apparently there’s another game on down the road.
A view from the stand as two football teams line up under floodlights to shake hands before kickoff. One team in red shirts and black shirts, the other in yellow shirts and blue shirts.

Another Saturday and another parkrun (at Ally Pally), and another 3 points for the Bees. My time of 41:01 was a nice surprise, I was aiming at sub-42 so job done! 🙂 Barnet’s 3-1 defeat of Gateshead sees us requiring just 8 points to clinch the title. All very satisfactory. #loveparkrun #barnetfc
Runners lined up at the start of a parkrun. In front of the them is purple pop up sign with Ally Pally on it. This is at Ally Pally parkrun. The runners are spread across a tarmac road listening to the welcome from the run director wearing a blue hivis vest. A selfie of a grey bearded parkrunner wearing sunglasses and running cap, with an apricot coloured shirt. Behind is the finish funnel with yellow bunting, with trees beyond. It is a bright sunny morning. The players and staff of Barnet FC gather together at the end of a match. We are looking down from the stand as they come towards us to acknowledge the supporters. In the background on the other side of the pitch the scoreboard shows the result. A 3-1 win for Barnet.

💩 Thames Water dumped 50% more raw sewage into rivers last year than the previous 12 months. 🤯 That's 300,000 of sewage discharge. 🤬And they want us to pay for the cleanup by increasing our bills. 🚰 Time to stop rewarding failure. Time for water be back in public hands.

Thames Water's £3 billion loan will include £898 million in consultancy fees and interest payments. And they plan on forcing customers to pay for it. We can't keep rewarding them for failure. Public ownership of our water is the only option.

The basics: We start at 0900 every Sunday at Priory Park in London (N8, Hornsey) between the tennis courts and the cafe. It's free to run and everyone's always welcome regardless of ability. Adults are welcome to run with children; only children get an official finish time (aged 4 to 14 inclusive)

Off to Pymmes parkrun today to avoid anything resembling a hill, or mud. On that score, mission accomplished. A walk/jog round in just over 42 minutes, so under my target of 45 minutes. Success! Nice to chat about the Cancer Research Winter Run 10k which sadly I’m not up to this year. #loveparkrun

Marshalling at @prioryparkparkrun.bsky.social this morning, after a few weeks away. Chilly & grey but that didn’t stop our 66 finishers. Followed by the obligatory coffee in the park cafe & a walk home through a muddy Ally Pally taking in the rewilding work. #parkrun #loveparkrun #juniorparkrun
Me marshalling at junior parkrun wearing a yellow hi-vis vest over a black jacket, and woolly bobble hat. In the bush bend me is a small lime green cone with the number 7 written on it. Alexandra Park rewilding project

We are creating a wet woodland and new reedbed to reduce flooding and provide a better habitat for birds, plants and wetland wildlife!
The woods are now dense and cast deep shade, the water is stagnant in this area. We plan to create a healthy, wet woodland in this area by:
* Removing selected trees to let in the light and allow the creation of a new curvy water channel. Trees will be selected for removal if they are diseased or have a likelihood of becoming dangerous in the near future
* Digging out new pools to hold water, creating new aquatic habitat and reducing flows into the sewer system during peak flows
In the upper woodland we will reduce winter flooding by:
* Digging out and guiding the channels in the woods to divert the water away from paths
* Repairing the pipe under the path to the pond area
Less than 20 years ago this woodland was quite sparse and there were very few trees along the reservoir boundary.

The project is part of our charity's ongoing work to improve the Park and Palace and become a sustainable home for all that we do. It is made possible thanks to £50,000 of funding from the Mayor of London.

When?
Ground and environmental surveys have been carried out, and work onsite will take place in winter 2024, with completion by March 2025.
We aim to minimise disruption, though there may be some short-term diversions onto temporary trackway. We do not intend to close the path entirely.

Future
More funding will be required for a second phase to restore the existing conservation pond and extend it to create a reedbed.
Reedbeds are scarce in London and ours will form a valuable new habitat for the Park.

SUPPORTED BY MAYOR OF LONDONA path through a park on a grey winter morning. There are a lot of puddles beside the path with bare trees all around
