Thank you for your commentary on anonymity, Challah Head Cha-la. I was asking a serious, legitimate, and very relevant question about downstream impact of tax proposal. That shouldn't put youon the defensive

My question for the councilor is: if its possible this has negative impact on cost of living for many or most Portlanders, would you reconsider supporting or promoting it?

Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Does not reckon the negative impact on consumer. Yes it will create equality by making new seasons closer in price to fred meyer, by increasing price at fred meyer. Everybody would love to shop at boutiques and farmers markets but unfortunately that is not an economic reality for most Portlanders

Increasing cost of living too, via groceries and gas prices. Hopefully they put at least a little research into it beforehand, feels a lot like the vacancy tax they proposed a little ways back (which was abandoned once it was modeled in real world)

Prob about as much as the brilliant vacancy tax on downtown real estate. Hopefully we've spent nothing on this and won't b/c its a stupid proposal

Nah, seriously. I'm sure there are plenty i haven't met, but I know at least couple dozen. Every DSA person I know is rich and yt

If you do it on an individual basis you can avoid negative consequences to low income portlanders, such as increasing prices at fred meyer. But most DSA ppl i know would be subject to those proposals so they won't see light of day

Tomato/tomahtoh, you tax equity portfolio assets, you tax gains before theyre realized.

Do you believe this policy will change pay at any level within subject orgs?
130
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I dont mind trying new things or progressive tax policy, but this proposal has many loopholes (e.g. PE) and too many negative consequences (cost of living basics) Want to increase tax on the rich? Tax assets, not income. Start w homes valued >1.25MM or equity portfolios >2MM

Yeah not a fan of TUF either, if thats what you're getting at

Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Yes, if its nondiscretionary. Food, for example, for everyone. Gas for some. Think of downstream effect of increasing price of gas and food. You can't truly believe this proposal has absolutely no negative consequences?
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
How would they lose profits by increasing prices?
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
You are suffering from wild delusions of grandeur if you truly believe than any pay, CEO or entry level worker, will be impacted by this policy
110
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
No need to move when they can bump prices 5-10%. Low income Portlanders suffer the collateral damage of your class war in an area that's already reeling from affordability
300
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Sadly the collateral damage of us upping the ante is many Portlanders' ability to buy food. I fear that many DSA members are wealthy enough to have the comfort of forgetting that. We agree that tax policy needs to be reworked at the federal and state level
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Delusional to believe this legislation would reduce CEO pay or increase entry level pay. It will be passed on like a tariff. Groceries and gas are going to feel it, and that has downstream effect everywhere
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Net income by definition is income AFTER taxes are applied. I think you're confusing w EBITDA
010
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It will be passed onto consumers, just like a tariff. No economist that has ever seriously advised an operating business would say that taxes hit net income but are not reconciled up the P&L, thats absurd. Also, won't current PMC lawsuit be replicated here? I think Novick was working on legality...

And those folks pose potential threat to other residents, incl danger to sobriety or even physical wellbeing in the event of fire

Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I'm all for housing first for those that can benefit from it. But there's certainly a segment of the population that wouldn't fit regardless of quantity/quality of services bc they have no interest in them for any number of reasons but primarily addiction and mental instability
110
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Yes, I remember but the rules exempt substance abuse in such a way that substance abuse w comorbidities (incl psych) can fall thru cracks. But again, no capacity/no point
000
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
100% agree. And the likelihood we dig up the funds as well as non-problematic personnel to build on that is nil or very close to it. But if we're building towards something, I'd prefer that over building out social housing projects when we can't even figure out home forward (for many many years)

That and a review of civil commitment processes/thresholds

Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Seems that would be doomed for failure as article outlines; someone that skips therapy for 96 hour meth binge would be far more likely to start a fire. I recognize I'm not offering alternative solution(s) but the model as proposed has holes for high acuity sitches, which i think article iilluminates
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
What would/should the repercussions be for skipping (intensive) treatment under ideal housing first model?

Delegation of >100 might be a *touch* excessive but what do I know. Denver isn't exactly Shangri-La
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Lot of the focus here in this article on property damage/danage to units, but I'd bet there's an equal amount of concern for liability suits wherein a resident injures (or worse) another resident or public bystander. Lot of bad things can happen when populations of high acuity ppl are concentrated
000
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Buried the lede IMHO. Housing first advocates and social housing project cheerleaders hopefully will acquaint themselves with property damage costs (as well as legal expense) for high acuity individuals. These costs can go far beyond the basic build costs

Would be super cool if we'd stop changing the measuring methodology on this. Data integrity is key to building policy for favorable outcomes. Changing methodology every 2-3 years only adds confusion, can't think of any benefit

Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
100% this. That would allow for a much more representative form of democracy

Would be lovely if we could figure this out *before* we add on social housing projects

Not a fan of Novick given previously stated affordability votes, but crafting policy to avoid litigation seems like a thing a lawyer councilor should do. If Morrillo/Green were aware of his efforts and rushed this thru anyways for electoral optics, he's probably rightfully irritated
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Ah, gotcha. I thought he had gone to them to send them after this proposal, but sounds like he (and others) were just trying to craft policy that would be a little more bulletproof from a litigation standpoint
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Not familiar with Novick's involvement, do you have link? Interesting as this is a modification to his policy from ten years ago

Include context of timing, 40 days or so out on election and wonder if there's any sincerity at all on part of legislators esp given past tweets re small biz owners
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I like the part where small biz owners are relieved , and the part where Gen fund gets 70millionish. CEOs will be unaffected tho, and consumers will bear the cost via gas and food. Add that to TUF & arts tax increase on 43k+ and conclude that these ppl are not helping affordability in this city
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
2/2 to serve electoral optics. What kind of "fair share" tax policy already contains a loophole for Mr Musk? If we want to regain higher paying jobs (70k+, which we need for big city budgets) we have to play our cards wisely. Affordability is already problematic and this make that problem worse
100
Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Monitoring next door for several years might be the most depressing hobby I can conjure. Anyhow, I'm all for taxation of CEOs at multiples of current rates but this policy is poorly put together, is surely going to a 6-6 vote a week or two ahead of the election, and is solely designed 1/2

Timbers @tim-bers.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Lol, nope. Paulson a prick and on that we can agree

False. It was in response to them working on a proposal with then-mayor Ted Wheeler for the city to help fund repairs to small business that had suffered vandalism, nothing to do w punishing vandals
