“Something is causing the world to be erased, bit by bit,” Vertin says with infinite patience and confidence. She holds up her hand. “Look at the rain water. It’s started.”

“I know it’s a lot to take in,” Vertin says, her tone clipped. “But soon, this era — this year — will be gone. I’ve witnessed this phenomenon happen exactly six times now.”

Vertin takes in the explanation with practiced balance, however overwhelming it might be. “This phenomenon I’m referring to is only on Earth so far. Have you seen raindrops falling up, by any chance?”

Vertin quietly files this demon away as some kind of Awakened — maybe a part of him Awoke at some previous point in time? She furrows her brows slightly at his description. “Then have you survived a Storm, Mr…? It’s been wiping away eras and years. I’ve been tasked with monitoring it.”

The Foundation where I work. A pleasure, Mr. Rose. You’re quite sure you haven’t seen rainwater fall up recently in your time?

“Hm.” The quiet murmur is all Vertin says to acknowledge this very, very different worldview. “You’re not an arcanist, then? Or human? Possibly — an Awakened?”

“A pleasure,” she says, returning the gesture. Vertin glances down to the clock on her wrist — the one that counts down to the Storm’s arrival. A sharp inhale. “I’m afraid it’s coming sooner than expected. Let me explain. Shall we sit down?”

The Storm. Or perhaps the Flood? They’ve been wiping away eras… I assumed you knew.

“That’s alright,” the Timekeeper says gently, taking out a packet of bread from her pocket. She scatters them around, and then backs up a few steps. “Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you. I’m here for other reasons.”

"A battery. Then..." Vertin furrows her brows, thinking. "You must be from a modern era, then."

The girl extends out her hand for the other to shake. "My apologies -- no, you don't. My name is Vertin."

"Your skill is impressive." Vertin emerges from her Suitcase now that the danger has passed. "I believed this to be another Storm, but it seems I was mistaken. I'm very glad to be wrong."
