Thursday Dallas Stars Roundup: Matt Duchene on LTIR as Colin Blackwell and Arttu Hyry Return

Water isn’t the only thing going up and down today

Gulutzan also said today that while they are reading everything one game at a time, they do think Seguin will be able to play both games of the back-to-back this weekend: "He's in great shape. Barring anything else, we think he'll be able to do it."

Gulutzan says Hyry will slot into that 3C spot for Duchene. Says they hope Duchene will be ready after his LTIR stay, but acknowledged that they also didn’t expect it to linger as long as it has already. Goalie decision will be announced tomorrow.

Looks like an optional for a lot of guys today in Dallas. Not on the ice: Rantanen, Hintz, Seguin, Benn, Duchene, Kiviranta, Heiskanen, Lindell. Everyone else out there, including Blackwell and Hyry.

No surprise, but Colin Blackwell and Arttu Hyry are both on the ice in Frisco for practice

Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn begin the final years of their contracts tomorrow. It could very well be the beginning of the end of an era in Dallas. A look at how the duo's relationship has evolved — and how they're trying to make this season count ⤵️ www.dallasnews.com/s...

Matt Duchene has officially been placed on LTIR (retroactive to 9/29). Colin Blackwell and Arttu Hyry have been called up from Texas.

Re: Duchene, Nill and Gulutzan have both said this is what happened: -Duchene showed up to camp healthy -Encountered a lower-body issue early in camp that they tried to manage with maintenance days, hoped he'd play final preseason game -had a setback few days ago, now on IR

Nill also said that he expects Colin Blackwell to be back up with the NHL club this season. Re: his conversation with Blackwell about going on waivers: "Those are the tough days." Nill said it was mostly a salary cap move, not reflective of Blackwell's play.

Jim Nill on 105.3: They plan to start having "more serious discussions" with Robertson/agent on December 1. Nill: "Jason wants to be here, and we want him to come back. We just need to find the right contract that fits, and I think we'll be able to do that."

Jim Nill just said on 105.3 the Fan that they are still discussing whether to move Duchene to LTIR. Didn't rule out that possibility, but said they're still in discussion with medical staff about what they're going to do.

Duchene to IR. Presumably retroactive, but not sure.

Matt Duchene is doubtful to play on Friday with a lower-body injury. Gulutzan said Duchene had a setback when practicing in Traverse City earlier this week, so they may have to go 11F/7D. Goalie hasn't been chosen yet, but Oettinger has been practicing fully.

Saw Matt Duchene doing some skating and shooting drills on the ice before practice with two coaches and the EBUG today, but he’s not out there with the main group for full practice. We will ask.

Stars extended DeSmith today for two more years @ 2.5 million. Age-36 and -37 seasons.

Just a heads up for the roughly 181231312412 people who said they hear the Stars were switching their home jerseys this year: they are not doing that. They'll wear the '99 alternates ten timeso at home, though!

Wild just announced that Brock Faber sustained a skull fracture when he took that puck to the head last week vs. Dallas. He had surgery and is doing well now. Guerin says no timeline for his return.

Blackwell clears waivers and is loaned to Texas. Hyry as well. Stars roster is set for opening night: 12F/7D, Capobianco as extra defenseman.

Two PP goals for Texas to take the lead tonight in their final preseason tune-up. Hemming, then Seminoff with a water bottle popper. Loved Seminoff's game tonight.

**Ack--corrections Roster submission deadline is Monday at 5pm, which means waivers-eligible players have to be placed on waivers today in order to be assigned to AHL tomorrow. Blackwell on waivers today, not Capobianco. I believe that ensures Hyry+Blackwell will start in AHL.

Robert Tiffin @tiffin.bsky.social · 27/09/2026

New Jersey claimed Poirier from Dallas off waivers, which is pretty shocking. They'll have to carry 3 goalies or waive one of Jake Allen or Nico Daws. Don't think I've seen a team claim a goalie off waivers with 0 games of NHL experience before to start the year.

Finding myself in the middle of this weird Twitter acrimony between Canucks fans who despise Quinn Hughes and Wild fans who desperately want to believe he loves them back. It seems unhealthy for all involved.
