Monsters. She supposed she was no less of one, only her oddities lay twisted inside a cage of bone and flesh and screams. Her eyes slid to the tall figure in black who matched the six-legged beast's pace with unhurried ease at her side. She'd seen the ruthlessness with which he'd overturned the basins earlier though, and much like with the swamps, she knew better than to trust a surface without ripples.

Nothing was ever truly still in the swamps. Teeth and eyes gleamed among the floating duckweed and up gnarled trees, waiting, waiting. Swamp-dwellers were masters of patience, whetting claws with hunger, and they rarely missed.
